3 Domain Industry Predictions for 2011

With the year coming to a close, I thought it would be a good time to make some predictions for the upcoming year.

– There will be a significant number of .CO drops around renewal time. I’ve seen a lot of really bad .CO domain names for sale (people emailing me telling me they need to sell urgently), and I am sure people will drop many of these bad purchases. Good keyword .CO domain names will increase in value by the end of 2011, spurred on by SMB adoption. I believe there will be at least 5 6-figure .CO domain sales.

– Monte Cahn will be back in the domain space in some way, although it probably won’t be for a large or well known company. Monte is one of the smartest guys in the industry, and I am sure his expertise is in high demand. I can imagine him starting up another company.

– There will be at least 10 publicly reported 7-figure domain sales during the course of the year. From my perspective, there are many people looking for liquidity, and there are also many people who have been getting liquid for the last year. Some of the people and companies who have significant cash reserves will look to reinvest, and high value, descriptive domain names will be a good option.

What predictions would you like to make for 2011?

  1. Good predictions, but you may be low on your 7-figure sales volume – could be substantially higher than that.

My predictions are on my new blog, DomainJD.com

  2. 2011 will see the continued emergence of alternative tld’s/ccTLDs. I think we’ll see at least one 7 figure ccTLD sale – likely a .DE or .co.uk and 2-3 dozen 6 figure ccTLD and alternative TLD sales (there are only about a dozen this year reported to dnjournal).

I think .co will flounder under the weight of better alternatives and possibly even the release of brand new gTLDs while extensions like .TV and .INFO will do very well – maybe not quite completely catching .NET but coming very close.

Startups that would have once branded on a 5-8 character “pronounceable” .com will instead lean toward relevant alternative extensions on their primary keyword – and *brand* based on the extension.

HTML5, mobile and web based “app stores” will have some great financial returns. Developers will all be rushing to create apps on their domains. Parking companies will offer “app store” solutions

  3. Nice predictions and I enjoy your insight.

Here are my prediction for 2011: I hope you expand your blog to include a job section dedicated to domain name related jobs or companies and an events section/calendar dedicated to domain name events.

  4. 1. .CO registry will continue to run single letter domain auctions to promote it. G.co will go up for auction

    2. More Gaming and Apps domains will sell

    3. Google will implement daily deals into their search.

  5. While I didn’t jump on the .CO bandwagon, one has to recognize the enormous marketing push given the extension. Who knows what the effect might be of a Godaddy .CO campaign in the Superbowl?

I anticipate aftermarket sales will continue to grow at a steady clip in all extensions. DNJ will continue to report many four and five-figure .COM sales but with 91+ million .COM registrations, the market for sub-$1500 domain sales will continue to blossom (including quality keyword domains in other TLDs). The overwhelming majority of my 2010 sales were for $1000 or less while about half were .COM domains.

  6. Lead generation (cpa) based sites will take more business away from ppc and banner ads and the value of such developed sites will explode.

Extensions like ccTld’s specially .DE & .CO will see tremendous growth in aftermarket prices.

Venture capital will be searching for internet based businesses to invest into.

I will be paying more taxes in 2011 šŸ™

  7. Best investments for 2011

Oil price will rise higher than ever before.

Gold & silver price will keep going up.

Diamonds ( Only high quality clear diamonds )

The Swiss Frank will be best & most stable currency.

    Developed & producing Domains!

    In what not to invest!

US Dollar ( It will plunge with no bottom in sight )

Real estate / Property ( In 2011 it will drop it’s deepest & will not start rising until mid 2012)
