Afternic Records Nearly $500k in Sales

I just received the Afternic sales report from last week, which includes all public .com sales above $2,000 and non-.com sales above $1,000.

As usual, some of the leading sales were names you might not expect to see at the top of a sales chart… like SuperTomato.com, RebuildTheDream.com, and PosterMedia.com. Incidentally, none of the 4 highest reported sales were in-house names owned by NameMedia companies.

IMO, this shows that if you have your names listed at sites like Afternic, you may have a better chance at selling them.

  1. Hi,

I have to learn the ‘art’ of how to register really “Good Crappy” domain names…as they seem to sell very well, week end and week out.

    e-dg.com $3,111.00

    e-ms.net $1,649.00

    As only two examples…

    Peace!
    Dan

  2. @Dan

I’m sure if you had one-million+ crappy, but not too crappy, domains, you could sell more than a few a week for $xxxx. Domaining can be as much of a numbers game as it can be a quality game, given that while playing the numbers game, it is a must to maintain a certain level of average quality. While most of the above aren’t stellar, they aren’t hyphenated .info’s either.

I have some quality names, but in January I alloted $500 dollars to play the numbers game to see what would happen by handregging stuff I find and from picking up drops that aren’t backordered. From selling and reinvesting the proceeds, I have turned that $500 into over 300 domains with around $1500 in cash reserves. I did have a $2,000 sale last month, which helped, but it has been a fun experience overall.

FYI, though, e-ms.net would not be something for which I would pay the registration fee.

  3. Makes no sence to me…..
Like the EasyPlumbing.com for 2k and when you google it – as “Easy Plumbing” just a trickle of paid ads if any – but I’ve had PlumberBargains.com – and google “Plumber Bargains” and get a page FULL of ads and yet no inquiries? What am i missing here?

Guess I should register Pl-umb3rStuff.net and somone will pay 5K

  4. @Elliot

Considered that – was curious public who.is just General Plumbing Supply.

The real shocker is SuperTomato.com for 15+k ! Bet a lot of ppl later check to see what’s done with it,including me – so with it published everywhere – might be good investment to get the traffic.

    SuperTomato.com ?
    IncredibleCelery.com
    WonderBroccoli.com
    MiracleCarrot.com

Better go get those veggies in your domain diet folks =)

  5. @ TJ

You can spend thousands of dollars guessing what domain name will be in demand. I stick with descriptive domain names, which always seem to find a home.

Buying brandable names in the hope that a well funded company that wants to use the name is like finding a needle in the haystack.

  6. Afternic states on their website that they currently have 3,731,354 domains for sale (remember that many of those are in the registration pathways at some of the largest registrars). So out of 3.7 million domains, they sold 154 last week for $1k or more. Correct me if my math is wrong, but I think that’s 0.004% of the total domains they have for sale. So for every 24,000 domains they have for sale, they averaged selling a little less than one domain for $1k+.

After dissecting the numbers, I think the above list looks a little less miraculous… no?

  7. @ Josh

That’s in a week, that doesn’t count private sales, and there are probably a VERY large percentage of names I wouldn’t even hand register listed for sale. I think that’s overly critical.

What % of your portfolio do you sell every week?

  8. @Elliot

I didn’t intend to be critical. I was responding to the commenters who are acting like Afternic’s weekly sales list is miraculous, when I see it as a game of very large numbers. Afternic is an awesome service, and I recently listed half of my portfolio there.

I’ve been averaging around a 1% monthly turnover rate, which is .25% per week. About half of my sales are on forums and range from $50-150 (70ish% profit margin), while half are end-user sales ranging from $400-2000 (90ish% profit margin). If you would like more detail, feel free to hit up my email.
