I read an article on the Afternic blog that had a pretty interesting stat. According to the company, “sales on Afternic’s Domain Listing Service (DLS) are up 94% for the first half of 2011—an encouraging statistic to domain sellers looking to generate cash from their portfolios.”
Afternic closed close to three quarters of a million dollars in domain sales last week (sales that can be publicly disclosed). With that being said, 7 of the 10 highest sales of the last week were via the DLS platform, owned by people or companies not associated with NameMedia. I know there were many people that complained that they felt Afternic focused on in-house sales over DLS sales, but it looks like the data is showing that this is changing.

I sell most of my names on my own or via the for sale message I have on the parked pages. Turned down one such offer on CocktailMix.com this morning.
Who is the agent selling the names at Afternic. My portfolio is so much better than what they are selling here.

If they’re selling based on inquiries rather than recommendations, it doesn’t matter how good your portfolio is. It matters how visible a for sale message is and where you have it listed for sale so that a potential buyer would know it’s for sale.

I’v noticed recently that a few people are following Frank Schillings example with the bright tops on the for sale landing pages.

Mostly all are craps, unable to catch how such craps sells for 1000’s. i have quality memorable 2 word domains, but none of a guy makes any good offers. Oh god, whats happening. I am even unable to remember even a single domain name as i go through them.

That’s the attitude to have. More sales means more money flowing into domains.
I still make the majority of my money flipping (very good) domain names in private. Much weaker market for subpar domain names, but the good ones are still selling!
TechDomainer is a parked page. There are a lot of fantastic developers out there. Far more than domain investors.
You bet, when a company can broker non-premium domains for nice prices, that is the company to call and I emphasize call. Domainers would do much better if they called their brokers and worked hard with them to sell.
The days of reg and wait for an offer are over. You have to be aggressive and never assume anything. Just wait until the economy finally recovers.

My bet though, is that most of these sales weren’t made because brokers contacted potential buyers. They were most likely names that people/companies inquired about and Afternic closed the deal. I think many of these were reg. and wait, but that’s not great if you own thousands of names and need to hope and pray someone comes knocking – and then has the budget to meet your asking price.
You hit the nail on the head. Having your business number on the page is a #1 must. I am working on a landing page of own to drive sales.
