Bill Sweetman to Leave Tucows and Start Domain Consulting Firm

Bill SweetmanBill Sweetman is probably one of the most recognizable people at a domain conference, and he is someone whose opinion is always valued when it comes to the domain industry. Since 2007, Bill has worked at Tucows, and his current role is Vice President, Domain Portfolio at Tucows and General Manager of YummyNames.

This afternoon on his blog, Sweetmantra, Bill announced his resignation from Tucows to start his own domain name consulting firm. Bill cited the upcoming launch of new gTLDs as a reason for his starting own firm, as well as the fact that hundreds of millions of more people will be going online in the coming years. Bill’s final day at Tucows will be April 26.

Bill is going to parlay his experiences into a “boutique domain name consulting firm,” and he intends to launch it later on this quarter.

There are a number of top tier domain consultants and consulting companies, and I think it’s great that Bill is making the move to launch his own firm. I wish Bill all the best, and look forward to hearing about it once the details are announced.

Congratulations to Bill and wishing him all the best.

  1. What do you need to consult people to do, build warehouses of names, or acquire names for high worth clients? Consultant is just a loosely worded term in this industry, point, click, inquiry page?

    • Domain acquisition strategy, covert acquisitions, registry management, domain management, domain monetization, sales…etc.

There will be a number of companies operating new gTLDs with limited experience, and Bill can advise, negotiate, and make introductions.

  2. Sweetman,

We wish you well in your future endeavors. Many people have nice things to say about you. We never got an opportunity to witness that first hand. But here is to doing business with you someday. God’s speed!

  3. Hello Bill,

We wish you well in your new endeavor and agree with you that there are going to be a lot of confused consumers looking for a safe extension to spend their money at. .COM Profit centers will make you look professional all the rest questionable. Good Luck

  4. Congrats Bill! Going miss working with him on some domain purchases but very happy to see him go solo. He will do very well!

  5. Too bad Hollywood never listened to Bill. They would have saved a ton of money getting the right domain to market their movies.

Hollywood studios would rather spend millions on Superbowl ads on movies most moviegoers already know about. As a result, movie studios overlook a super quality movie domain to promote their movies. I suppose Facebook is the new platform to launch a movie marketing campaign.

At least Bill tried to education the uninformed movie industry. His Hollywoozy website is actually cool. Good luck on your future endeavors Bill.
