Blockchain Now Managing Bitcoin.com

This morning, the Wall Street Journal and Coin Desk reported that a deal was struck involving the exact match Bitcoin.com domain name. Blockchain, one of the leading Bitcoin wallet services, announced the deal this morning. Bitcoin.com had previously been developed, and it had a video explaining what Bitcoins are and how they are used.

Terms of the Bitcoin.com deal were not disclosed in the company’s blog post sharing the news, but Blockchain announced that “Blockchain.info has struck a five year deal to exclusively manage the domain name  Bitcoin.com.”

The domain name has been registered under privacy protection since 2010, so I can’t see a Whois change indicating a change of ownership. Based on the reports from the Wall St. Journal and Coin Desk, I can’t tell for sure if this was actually a sale, lease, or some other type of deal. The Wall St. Journal article seems to indicate a sale, but the wording in the other reports doesn’t indicate a sale to me. Either way, it doesn’t really matter all that much from my perspective.

Whatever the situation is, I think it is wise for Blockchain.info to make a deal to manage Bitcoin.com. This exact match domain name is easy to remember and I think it adds more credibility to the brand. It may also get them more organic traffic from Google, since Bitcoin.com seems to rank pretty well in searches for “bitcoin.”

It appears that exceptional Bitcoin related domain names are pretty popular right now.  Earlier this year,  BitcoinWallet.com was sold for a reported $250,000, and I also shared the story behind the plural  Bitcoins.com domain name. I am not a buyer of Bitcoin domain names, but it seems like companies are spending money to control the best bitcoin domain names.

  1. I have BitcoinSolutions.com and FreeBitcoins.com
I would like to buy more premium bitcoin domains.
I lost a lot money holding actual bitcoins…i rather hold bitcoin domains.

    • I lost a lot money holding actual bitcoins…i rather hold bitcoin domains.

At first I laughed when I read this, but then I considered the high number of domainers who still believe Bitcoins are the future, so I can see where your coming from… No shortage of domainers who would invest in a sinking ship and then re-invest again when it’s under water.

    • Raider, do you mean you actually took your loss, or you’re just holding onto a current loss? I did the opposite in a manner of speaking – I lost out on investing in Bitcoin more than once when only a small investment would have made me anywhere from $5/10 million to $50/100 million. I was noticing Bitcoin when you could buy so cheap, first in the very early days and then again later when it was still very cheap compared to now, well below $100, but I was just not willing to take any risk at all, in part because of already sitting on losses from stock plays. You know what they say about 20/20 hindsight, but I sure do regret it anyway. In the early days the risk would have been next to nothing compared to what I put into those stocks, so go figure…

That’s because all the good ones are gone now. 😉

  3. I picked up a few nice ones before Bitcoin domains started becoming news. Almost all the good ones were already gone though.

    • I would tell you, but that would blow my stealth mode secret identity cover here which I don’t want to do. One thing I would very much advise, however, is that you not put all your eggs in one basket as they say. If you want to be in domaining then you definitely want to diversify beyond Bitcoin, which is much too narrow and risky a niche even if you target niches. It’s fine that Bitcoin is the way you got into it to begin with, but let that only be the way you got into it. Personally I don’t believe there are many good and valuable Bitcoin domains to begin with, so be careful. Unless of course you’re the one who got most of the best ones I’ve found, lol.

    • No problem.

I know I am above water already with over 80 domains, I have one I think will go over 10,000 today, and another in the x,xxx for sure. If you’re interested, we can talk over email, I don’t have privacy turned on so it would be a greater disservice for me than you if either of us were to leak anything. I just would like a second opinion on my portfolio, but I already know at least 3 -4 domains are incredibly good.

  4. That’s funny, I do remember contacting you about the sale of “freebitcoins” Anunt.
I just about managed to snag a few crypto names myself. Quite surprised however that I have not received offers on bitcointrades.com since I listed on sedo recently.. Decided to develop it anyhow
