At today’s Snapnames Live Auction at Domainfest, Lonnie Borck was the winning bidder for Bookmarks.com, purchasing it for $310,000. This is a fantastic domain name, and it is a great purchase to incorporate with his netRocket.com website, a bookmark scheduling service.
Bookmarks.com is the category killer domain name for netRocket’s vertical, and it was a smart purchase. Not only will this help drive targeted traffic to netRocket, it is also a nice defensive purchase, as it prevents another upstart company from owning the category.

  1. This will be a really good one to watch. He’s in a market with some very large, well established competition, and his service doesn’t seem to have built up much market share. If buying Bookmarks.com helps him get significant marketshare, it will be an example that domainers can point to when trying to prove the point about “category killer domain name(s)”.

    Two god-awful domain names. I’m not convinced that the name of a website matters 1% as much as the functionality of the website.

  4. I’ve been keeping an eye on this arena for a while and I’ve seen netRocket garner some solid praise early on. There’s a lot of promise to what this crowd is doing and it will certainly be interesting to see how this domain purchase comes into play. It looks like they are very forward thinking so I wouldn’t be surprised if they climb the ladder quickly.

    This represens a move back to common sense – descriptive and generic domain name where the domain name explains the site’s purpose.
    Hopefully this is a sign that the Web 2.0 silliness with the funky fonts and the cool, crazy, meaningless, seemingly misspelled, and downright immature domain names should be waning. If I can’t recall your domain name and I can’t spell your domain name and if your domain name has no meaning and you have no real brand – how can I become a repeat vistor? how can I tell a friend or someone on the street how to find you? Simple. I can’t.
