Details About Securing a .Blog Domain Name

KKWT BlogKnock Knock, WHOIS There (KKWT) is the company that will be operating the .Blog domain name extension. KKWT is a sister company of WordPress, the most popular blogging CMS used by millions of websites. For that reason among others, I think .Blog is going to be a highly sought after new gTLD extension, and I believe we will see a greater percentage of developed .Blog domain names than other extensions.

Earlier this morning, Mark Armstrong  published a blog post on WordPress.com announcing the Sunrise period for trademark owners to secure their .Blog domain name. Judging by the number of UDRP and URS filings this year, I think trademark owners should participate in the Sunrise period to protect their brands.

In today’s blog post, KKWT also mentioned two .Blog websites: Dave.Blog and Design.Blog. I reached out to Auttomatic to ask about how people can secure great .Blog domain names in advance as a part of the company’s founders’ program. Don Ruiz, head of Business Development for Knock Knock, WHOIS There, shared this with me:

“As a registry we are entitled to provision up to 100 domains in a Founder’s program for the purpose of promoting .blog. We have been working with founders across several verticals who we feel match up to our goals and vision for .blog. We plan to roll many of these out within the first 60 days of Surnrise. At this time we are still considering a small number of additional candidates.”

.Blog is one of the few new gTLD extensions I am interested in following. I think it could have an outsized influence on the entire new gTLD space.

To me that’s it’s only real value, to enhance awareness of new gTLDs in general, and hopefully also even .US despite Neustar’s never ending efforts to bury it in failure and obscurity.

  2. Many registrars work with .blog registry, but very few, if any, offer Sunrise period registrations. Good luck to find at least one, if you are not a huge corporation. Jerks!
