DFG Illness Update

I know there are a lot of people like myself who became really sick after getting home from DomainFest. I had a fever from Saturday night until yesterday when it finally broke.  I still have a cough, but my doctor prescribed a z-pack for what he diagnosed as bronchitis.

Ron has been great with his updates on this situation, but unfortunately nobody can comment on DN Journal. I’ve seen a number of comments on Nico Zeifang’as Facebook wall, but if you aren’t a FB friend of his, you can’t comment their either… LOL.

Anyway, feel free to comment here if you’d like. I know a number of people have doctor’s appointments scheduled for today, so any additional info might be helpful to those that need it. I would recommend making an appointment to see your doctor though, just in case, especially with the weekend approaching.

I am up at Stowe, Vermont for my company annual meeting, but am not skiing yet to make sure I first get rid of whatever infection I have. I think I am on the tail end of this thing since the fever and chills are gone, but I will keep you posted.

I hope you have an easy recovery… BTW, to those who didn’t get it, you are VERY lucky.  I can usually work through everything, but this just about knocked me on my ass for a few days.

  1. Legionnaire’s disease is some nasty stuff….

I hope some of the older people at the mansion see a doctor.. it can be really serious… Hugh H… I mean you.

Hope you all feel better soon.

  2. It is Acute Bron…. (as E said)

I was going to announce it yesterday but felt to ill.

    Z-pak is the only cure,as E said
take the 2 separate stages as directed,

    (whezzing,coughing,choking,flem,mucus,green/yellow)
You should also take a Exporant to thin the mucous
    in your middle chest (lungs)…

Your broncal (throat to chest ) tubes are narrowed by
the mucous that is why you choke.cough as air is restricted.

Don’t smoke , Plenty of water!

Bron is like Samsonite luggage, it keeps on hanging around…

    It may linger and return?

“Treat it” or could turn CHRONIC from ACUTE.

Now I really wonder what went on at the DomainFest… specially at the Playboy Mansion

.Co really stands for Contagious 🙂
everybody shared Joan Rivers who catered everyone

    Nasty Hodaddy Girl, yuk!

  4. Do you mind if @Elliot deletes your 2nd comment, @Landon? There’s ladies here, and we don’t want to hear off-color, sexist jokes like that! The first comment was on topic and informative.

    Him or me.

  5. Sounds to me like DomainFest was full of a bunch of pale-white, scrawny domainers with weak immune-systems. You fella’s should hit the gym more 🙂

  6. My last post was meant as a JOKE – hope you all feel better. I’ll be at D-Fest next year…checkbook in hand 😉

  7. @Louise,

You threw down the gauntlet – looks like E is showing you the door!

I agree with you, that WAS a rather tacky comment.

  9. @Elliot,

I know – just messin’ with you. Hey, instead of plain google, try zork.co for search – results are easier on the eyes – just try it.

  10. I lost a day of skiing today because of this. Didn’t want to push myself and risk having it worsen.

Wish someone would investigate to find the culprit so others don’t get infected and/or we know for sure the cause and what action to take. Somewhat surprised Oversee hasn’t said anything since so many attendees have been impacted.

Really scary stuff… hope my cough and congestion clears up ASAP though.

  11. @Elliot,

Dude, that sucks. Seems like the past few years, viruses are more frequent and more virulent than in the past – at least in my neck of the woods.

  12. Forgot to mention I feel 95% back to normal other than my cough. I went in as a precaution. It’s scary to think that actually I’m feeling better but the lung thing could be getting worse if I had not treated it with antibiotics.
    I’m on a zpack , 500mg for 10days

  13. Strange thing is it didn’t really start for me until Sunday night and was very light until yesterday. I thought it was just allergies. No flu-like symptoms, just chest congestion and a typical cold so I don’t know if it’s related. But I went ahead to the doc today given everyone else is laid up pretty hard.

    Hope everyone feels better soon.

  14. Never thought I’d feel happy that can’t afford to go to one of these domain conferences, but here it is…
Hope everyone gets back to normal quickly, and gets any necessary medical care.
Especially you, Elliot – too many people get too much out of your blog and posts for you not to feel well 😉

  15. (Just posted this at domainshane.org, but thought you might find this helpful.

So I have done a good study on the disease the past hours! Here is the best write up I can find.
    http://www.osha.gov/dts/osta/otm/legionnaires/disease_rec.html
There are two “types” of Legionaries. One is very serious and deadly, the other has no significant risks.
The mild version, Pontiac Fever, has an incubation of 1 to 3 days from time of exposure to onset of symptoms. (My first symptoms were 36 hours after saying goodbye to the mansion.)
Legionaries Disease has an onset of symptoms from 2 to 10 days after exposure.
Can people check in here how long after they left the conference until they got symptoms?

Also, the more serious Legionaires disease has listed as possible symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. I had little or none of these. My wife has not reported to me any of these? Anyone else get them?

The Legionaries Disease version of the disease will occur in about 5% of those exposed, while the less serious Pontiac Fever version will effect 90% of those exposed.

I believe there were a bit less than a thousand people at Domain Fest. I have heard numbers sounding like about 50 people who have confirmed are sick, but most people are probably not reporting online about it. 🙂
Also, 100% of friends I know who went, got sick.

Any further info to confirm any of this data will be helpful.

  16. I felt a little crappy on Sunday, tired, back ache. By Monday I had a raging soar throat and coughing up yellow crap. I thought it was just a cold which is actually rare for me, I never get sick. Went to minute clinic because doc would be a week. Got the ZPak, started that night. By Wednesday I was back to feeling normal. I’m thinking about maybe taking another round of the ZPak just to make sure. If you really want to kill it off and then some, get a script for Cipro. Hope everyone is doing better.

  17. Well,

I got that “raging soar throat and coughing up yellow crap” as well. Got it when I arrived in San Francsico at Sunday for the dot-nxt conference. Slept 9h per night for several nights and last night 11h, seems to be OK now.

Question: Since when do the Oversee guys know about it, and why do I get my first communication from them only TODAY?

    Alexander

  18. If it is legionnaires bacteria, it is actually a very virulent bacteria. It can be deadly if misdiagnosed (most times as pneumonia rather than legionnaires disease). As DK posted above, “There are two “types” of Legionaries. One is very serious and deadly, the other has no significant risks (http://www.osha.gov/dts/osta/otm/legionnaires/disease_rec.html).” People may be taking it lightly, and the media as well, because it was at an event at the Playboy Mansion, but it is a real bacteria and a deadly disease if misdiagnosed. I along with many of my coworkers have dealt with legionnella bacteria exposure, so I am very familiar with it. I can be reached on facebook or myspace if anyone wants to communicate more. Take care everyone. ~Benita Belardes

  19. Elliot,

Good to meet you at the DomainFest and Glad you’re getting better. I too got knocked-down by the bug. Symptoms waned by Wednesday, but I still have only 1/2 my normal energy. Anyone else feel lingering fatigue? As I tweeted earlier today, I always thought “domain fever” was my addiction to domain investing… after DomainFest, it’s taken on a new meaning!

    – Steven

  20. It seems I have passed -whatever I have- on to my girlfriend. And I came back home only on Friday late night; have been on the dot-nxt conference after DF.

Anyone else passed the shit on to his or her family?

I go to the doctors now.

    Alexander

  21. Just back from the ER. Guess what they said:

    – Unless you feel REALLY ill: Nothing any doctor could do
    – Stay away from the Internet
    – Have fun

    Great advice.

And before I went to the doctors some construction workers turned off electricity for the whole street.

I guess someone tries to tell me SOMETHING:
“THERE IS A LIFE OUTSIDE THE INTERNET AND DOMAINING AND ICANN”.

Really? There is? I will now go to the beach and try to find out.

    And always remember:
    – STAY AWAY FROM THE INTERNET
    – HAVE FUN

    Alexander
