This morning as the .Blog general availability phase went live, I registered one .Blog domain name. Or so I thought. After receiving the order confirmation email, I checked the Whois, and someone else’s name was listed as the registrant. Shortly thereafter, I received another email to let me know about the error and I am sure I will be refunded soon.
I own just a handful of new domain names (n.Holdings, n.Ventures, Elliot.Link, ElliotSilver.Link, Silver.Ventures, and maybe a couple of others I am forgetting about). My attempt to register this one .Blog domain name wasn’t any strategic change for my business. It’s more like taking a bit of a gamble for less than the cost of a hand of blackjack in Las Vegas. The domain name didn’t get registered to me, but it’s no big deal.
I checked quite a few other keyword .Blog domain names this morning, and most came back as registered or premium reserved domain names. That seems to be what happens with most new extensions when they become open to the general public to register.
Although I am not really interested in buying new domain names for the most part, I do think they can be useful to some companies. If WordPress promotes .Blog with registrar partners, I think they could have some success. Time will tell I suppose.
I am curious if you bought any .Blog domain names, and if you want to share, what .Blog domain names you bought (please don’t turn this into a sale post – sell them elsewhere as this is not a marketplace).
Got swindled by these guys. Not happy with how they do business.
It’s total garbage the way Automattic is running .BLOG. Gotta attempt to make back that $19 million.

I’m still undecided on investing into this one. I’ve heard stories from both sides of the fence and still need to do more research before pulling the trigger.

i tried to pre reg one but they wanted 750 a year renewal ontop of 700 for the ‘premium’ domain. i picked up the dot com for 100 bucks several years back…
Quite Expensive… most of the keywords already reserved or at a very high premium, do not leave any scope to register a good .blog Domain Name.
Registered Darth.blog 10 minutes ago. Site is up. An hour ago I had no intention of buying a .blog nor was I aware today was GA. Thanks DomainInvesting for the news.
I got forrester.blog which is my last name. I had a funny experience where I tried to register this domain twice through Uniregistry. The payment went through but my receipt said canceled both times. I then tried GoDaddy and the registration was successful. Paid around $30.
May as well get .vcr and .dvd , just an out dated term that needed to come out 8 years ago.
Got a good one in the world of science. Don’t want to share it, too good. Very surprised it was available and not at premium, someone dropped the ball. Used as a forwarding tool to my news website. Cost about $26 with discount at godaddy.
Genomics isn’t a premium because Genomics scientists don’t want to blog. They want to publish papers in respected science and medical journals.
The rest of the time they are researching or trying to raise grant money from the US government.
My guess is you’ll drop the domain Bob. 🙂
Good catch! Regardless, the field of genomics is a prime time 21st century game changer for humanity and all life really (natural and synthetic).

I completely agree with John. Just the search engine advantage of having “blog” in the domain, as it forwards to .com, is worth investing approx. $@24.00 a year. Good luck Elliot.
I was thinking merely of defensive, though. Would never recommend switching from .com to .blog.
Oh, of course, I hadn’t considered the ‘defensive’ angle…Just another reason to register it… 🙂

Nope, none, IMHO .blog and blog-related names are just a waste of time and money from an investor perspective.
“Blog” is obviously a part of our vocabulary now, and people like what are called “blogs” but which may be named something that does not contain the word “blog.” Is it a word that people really care about or get excited about? What does this tell us:

I did not but I recommend companies to acquire theirs. I listed the .BLOG new gTLD as one of the most important domain name extensions companies should secure their major domain name(s) with in my new gTLD reports.
Not yet, but i think it may be a good idea to reserve one for your brand especially with content marketing growing more and more in popularity. You never know but you may need it tomorrow
Why be a blooog when you can be .media, .ink, .press, .news for much less per yr on premiums ?
