I want to share a neat infographic created by Mike Mann’s Domain Market. The infographic contains a brief history of domain names, and it includes information about registrations, usage around the world, and significant domain sales. It’s a pretty cool infographic.

This is Nice
Very cool. It would be nice to have as a poster to hang on an office wall.
The bottom right portion of the infographic doesn’t specify the TLD, but I assume they mean .com. No data sources are referenced either.
I think Germany has many more domains
Thanks for sharing Elliot!
Very cool indeed!
Wow that’s crazy how much it jumped in 2000. I wish I could go back in time and buy up a bunch of them in the 90’s
That’s a very pretty poster!
I would question the “domains registered” number.
I think that number refers to domains registered in those years that are visible now in the zone files but the list doesn’t even jive with the domains on this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_oldest_currently_registered_Internet_domain_names
(I haven’t gone through to see what amount of those from 1985 are still active which are in .com .net .org .edu
This is probably where they got the “6” from:

Love Mann and this is great PR but it’s sloppy work and data is questionable. Like the “8 glasses of water” it will probably be picked up and spread around some more and quoted in other articles.
Awesome infographic on domain names. Although the data is a bit dated.
Please consider viewing two infographics we made in 2015 (gathered the data, and designed the infographic).
First infographic is on most visited websites according to Alexa.

Second infographic is on most visited .me websites.
