DomainTools Rolls Out Design Change on Whois History Tool

Last month, you probably noticed that the DomainTools website was redesigned. In addition to a new logo, the navigation and other aspects of the DomainTools website was changed. Aside from sometimes getting annoyed when I roll over the top drop down menu, I think the redesign was implemented well.

While doing some domain research at NamesCon this week, I noticed that DomainTools made a layout / design change to its popular Whois History Tool. Some of the changes that I noticed include the following:

  • On the results page, instead of the results being laid out horizontally, they are now laid out vertically.
  • Change to the colored links indicating whether the Whois result is public or private
  • Graphic now indicates if a Whois result is private
  • Whois records that are the same as previous records are rolled up
  • Can compare changes to Whois records side by side

Shortly after noticing the change, I bumped into DomainTools CEO Tim Chen, and he confirmed the change took place a few days ago. He is also happy to hear feedback from users if you’d like to share it with him. You are welcome to contact DomainTools directly, or you can leave your feedback here if you’d like.

I haven’t used it much yet because I’ve been busy with the conference, but it was a bit strange looking at the new layout after having used the other layout many times a day for a number of years. I am told feedback is positive so far, and I am sure your feedback would be appreciated as well.

  1. I love Domain Tools! The redesign is good, but I liked the old layout better.

Elliot, I agree with you about the top drop down menu, for me it is very aggravating. It would be nice if they could stop it from dropping down when you scroll over it.

    thanks!

  2. I use it every day all day.

The drop menu for me it’s also aggravating,we mention this to them 2 months ago but no luck.
Other then that it’s a tool that i depend on.

  3. Having been a customer for many years now I was very comfortable with the whois history layout and use it daily. I may become used to the new layout but honestly it sucks I have to and here is why. It is to me the most important tool to my business.

1.Scroll to specific dates which is odd for two reasons. One it has a small width to it and two it takes longer to search now because of it, annoying. Prior was so EASY laid out right before you left to right, pick a date based on year, EASY!
2.Try scrolling slow enough to not pass a screen shot!
3.No more idea of possible domain changes based on the colouring shades of date, made finding dns switches etc nicer to do.
4.I am now debating switching tools at some point if my eyes keep bugging out which is bad for business, theirs.

Honestly some companies just don’t get it, newer is not always better.

  4. Not a fan of the change . . .change for change sake ? What issues did the redesign solve ? maybe it was a mobile-friendlier move ? just the scroll thing sucks and the lack of color keys too. . . ugh.
