Found on DNForum: Cloud Domain Sale

I was browsing through DNForum’s domain names for sale above $100 section last night, when I saw a domain name listing that was interesting, to say the least. CloudSperm.com is for sale for $2,000. Yes… CloudSperm.com.

Described as an “amazing cloud domain.Brandable,” CloudSperm.com is a name that has me shaking my head and laughing. I have no idea why someone thought it would be a good idea to register, and I can’t seem to pinpoint who would buy it.

Has the cloud domain purchase craze really become this bad? Are there absolutely no more cloud keyword combinations available left to register?

Here’s a tip for people trying to capitalize on the cloud domain craze likely fueled by the Apple iCloud.com domain acquisition. Don’t buy domain names that have no search volume, make no sense, and would be especially  embarrassing  to use in market. They may get you a laugh (likely at your expense), but they probably won’t make you any money.

  1. @ Elusive

I know cloud domain names have been picked over and I can’t imagine that there are many worth registering. I didn’t say it’s dumb to register cloud domain names though. I said “Don’t buy domain names that have no search volume, make no sense, and would be especially embarrassing to use in market.”

  2. Really makes you wonder what people are thinking. Surely a name like this gets regged on the basis of zero research?

  3. Slick way to get your domain name out there. You know that he did not say that it was dumb to register cloud domain names.

  4. That would be great if I plugged my domain name on purpose. I genuinely thought he was saying it was dumb. Obviously I misread what he was saying. But yea, that would have been hella slick if I did it on purpose.

  5. “Don’t buy domain names that have no search volume, make no sense, and would be especially embarrassing to use in market.”

According to your advice, iCloud.com doesn’t meet two ofyour three criteria and shouldn’t be purchased.

What a $4.5 million mistake that would be.

You don’t think the “i” branding makes sense to Apple? I do. I also think it makes sense like e- things make sense. “Cloud Sperm” as a keyword term does not make sense.

Perhaps the advice should add “*unless you are buying said domain names to build a brand and not to flip.”

  6. What’s wrong with .Net? 2nd largest tld, SEO ranks about third overall. Not saying you should register the .net over the .com in this instance, though. .Com will always be everyone’s first choice.

I think people have gone crazy and beat the cloud thing to death. By now all the good ones are gone, everything that’s left is worthless. Same for 3D, though it was always a fad.

  7. Going down the drop lists sometimes you see some corkers, pure comedy lol
Its probably true that most all of the decent cloud/3d/social type names are well picked over in .com . Recently Ive been buying other extensions because I think there are still some good value to be had there. I got lots.tv and social3d.tv on the drop the other day, not sure if I’ll keep it yet.
.com like gold will always be king, but theres plenty of silver millionaires too 🙂

  8. I wanted to find an even more ridiculous “cloud” domain that was still available for registration.

I was sure I had found one when I thought of “CloudGaga.com”.

But no… it has been registered since 2009 and is currently parked.

    I’ll keep searching…

  9. Yaaawn. Are people still talking about cloud?
It’s been around for years yet the word is thrown around so liberally and people talk about it like it’s new (like 3d).
Remember when VOIP was the big thing, It has fizzled right down.
There are many cloud companies out there. Too many.
Once the dust settles there will be a marginal downsizing.
Stay away from cloud names. Look out on the horizon.

  10. Cloud names are doing really well if you look on Sedo and DNJournal for instance. I have sold 3 lately, one for high x,xxx to an end-user, so if you are smart and pick good names, there is unlimited potential.

I am keeping my better cloud names for another year or two until the market ripens a bit more.

@Damon, the concept of cloud computing has been around a while but its only now the name is really being adopted by companies, including small to medium sized businesses.

I presume you all saw the sale of Cloud.com to Citrix for $200 million. That was a business sale as well though. Still shows how term is being adopted though.

Amazon just bought CloudPlayer.com as well

    Anyway, good luck everyone

  11. I jumped on the ‘cloud bandwagon’, howbeit..too late..too soon, however, I was able to pick over the cloud droppings and managed to buy a few clouds with some great searchwords..
    whatiscloudcomputing.biz
    whatiscloudapp.com
    cloud.com.ag
    and a few others..
    better late then never!

  12. “Don’t buy domain names that have no search volume, make no sense, and would be especially embarrassing to use in market.”

Many cloud domains that have sold below $5000 have low search volume or none at all. The buyer is probably going to implement the cloud domain in their organizational plan.

There are good cloud domains that make sense with no search value. They are short domain names, even with Cloud and an actual terms following that makes sense.

I know of one cloud domain that is highly marketable without any search value. It is dot com, cloud is at the beginning, and there is a 3 character word that follows. It is an actual cloud service.

Good cloud domains can be located. They might be tough, but the search is wroth your time.

  17. I just registered:

    cloudsrvrs.com
    whoacloud.com
    cloudwhoa.com

I like them, especially cloudsrvrs.com – that one could do well, I might even develop it.

  18. Here’s a question, What about Cloud domains with the new “global” domain extension of dot .co? Amazon had bought Cloud.co for an “undisclosed” amount of money. I know most cloud domains in .CO likely will never be worth much. And yes, dot COM is king i know! However i own one in particular that could do well sometime in the future IF dot CO becomes more popular/used: CloudComputing.co

I figure that it goes along good with Amazon’s Cloud.co and of course you have your Cloud.com and CloudComputing.com “right next to it”. CloudComputing.co is as close to these as you can get and its “Global”. I did build it out a little just to get some traffic to it and make a little money while i wait for an offer from an end user. I’m actually doing very well with it, getting over $2 per click from adsense and a decent amount of traffic for a dot CO.

What is everyone’s thoughts on the domain CloudComputing.co? What could its potential be in the future? It’s dot CO, i know but it’s “global” and Cloud is growing very rapidly globally. 2 letter domain extensions are more popular with European countries etc. Amazon paid a large sum for Cloud.co. My ad revenue is good so i don’t mind sitting on it until the right end user comes along (willing to wait as long as needed) Thanks!

  19. I recently just re-registered the only cloud name I own that makes sense. I however can not peg a value on it. Converttocloud.com. It made sense to me at the time however the spouse believes I wasted the money.
I would love to set her straight or find out she was correct and pay off the bet of a night out of her choosing. Come on someone back me up on this.
I really thing that graphene related domains are the next hot domains. Am I wrong there also?

    • “however the spouse believes I wasted the money”

They are usually right when it comes to domains. Sounds like you’ll be taking her out.

“I really thing that graphene related domains are the next hot domains.”

Hand you credit card over to your wife, that is my advice.

    • Good idea. Thanks. She did not get it before I registered Grapheneinvesting.com, Cvdgraphene.com Grapheneoleds, nems, nands, additives, transparentelectrodes, graphiteprices etc…All of them .coms. Maybe I can make up for the boo-boo.

Do you own a few graphene domains? I bought all of those to secure a vertical package I may sell all to one buyer at a premium?

  20. This cloudsperm is just an extreme case, total craze. It has no zero potential for brand attractiveness and credibility. I guess the registrant doesn’t even understand what the cloud means in the context of computing.

Anyway, you can check KloudLeap.com and share your views on it. Just hoping it is better than cloudsperm.
