Frank Schilling & Antony Van Couvering to Host gTLD Event

Frank Schilling of Uniregistry and Antony Van Couvering of Minds and Machines will be co-hosting an event focusing on new gTLD domain names. The event is called Silicon Beach TLD Fest, and it will be held on April 21, 2014 at 6pm at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica, California.

Here is how the event is being billed according to the event website:

“Over 500,000 new domains have already been registered in 70+ new Top Level Extensions including .berlin, .photography, and .sexy. Meet two of the leading companies in this new space, MINDS + MACHINES and UNIREGISTRY.

Learn what the new TLD revolution means for your startup – and how you can make money in this exciting new space. Legendary domainer Frank Schilling will share his personal perspective.”

The event is free to attend, but there is a 150 person capacity. Judging by the popularity of Southern California domainer meetups and by the number of people that always seem to crowd around Frank at domain conferences, I would bet this event will be at capacity. Ā People who want to learn more about the new TLD process should consider attending this event. I would assume Frank and Antony will be willing to answer questions about the gTLD process as well as offer their thoughts on these new domain names.

Reservations are required in order to attend, and they will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Although I haven’t bought many new gTLD domain names, I would attend if I lived in that area.

  1. Should that website be silicon beach.conference? Better yet GTLD.fest?
The new g’s are really mixing things up and that includes people and the market. Will take years to iron itself out IMO. Even longer if 2nd round happens in 2015.

Good luck to organizers. A lot of sporadic events causing event overload I am afraid.

  2. ***BEWARE OF UNIREGISTRY PHONE NUMBERS***

Here are the Uniregistry phone numbers below.

    Phone: 345-749-6263 (NAME)
    Fax: 345-746-6263 (NAME)

Yes they look like your typical U.S. area code phone number but they are not. Uniregistry is based in the Cayman Islands and these are international phone numbers. I called to speak with Uniregistry a few weeks ago and was charged a whopping $98.34 for the phone call.

Get an 800 number Uniregistry. Ridiculous!!!!!

  3. Hi Todd, For our customers, Uniregistry offers a toll free number inside the help section of our website at Uniregistry.com. This phone is answered promptly by our staff here in the Cayman Islands Mon – Sat and reachable without charge. You correctly point out that Uniregistry (while US friendly an centric) is located in the Cayman Islands (250 miles south of Cuba) where I have lived and based my operations for the past 13 years.

The 345 number you posted above is for our corporate offices and is not featured in the help section of the Uniregistry.com website. If you are a US resident on a money saving phone plan, your local US phone company may charge you rates akin to calling Europe or Asia to reach this number, it may not be a part of your phone plan.

@Scott – this event is more a one evening primer targeted toward those curious but less initiated where new names are concerned. I agree domain-conference fatigue is here now with all these events.

Frank, directly on your website under this link are the phone numbers I listed because Brett Fausett in his comment on TheDomains.com gave these numbers also.

“@todd: we do have customer support, live during business hours (phone number is on info page off bottom footer), and we expect to expand those times as we grow.”

Here is the link Frank to your phone number on your info page of Uniregistry

I just think you should make it crystal clear to your customers that these are international numbers. When someone is looking for a phone number and sees what looks to be a U.S. area code they will dial it and not look at much else especially when you thought that Uniregistry was in Newport Beach, California. @Frank Schilling

By the way I was calling from iPhone which did not have an international plan active because I rarely call international but now I do have an international plan just in case I come across more companies like yours who seem to have a U.S. area code when in fact they do not.

No worries though I’ll eat the hundred bucks just fix the problem for the next customer that wants to spend money with your company.

  6. Yeah when I went to the Uniregistry contact page and saw the Cayman Island address with the 345 area code, I immediately assumed it was a North American number I was calling.

    LOL
