Frank Schilling: We Are Now the Largest Parking Company [Updated]

When Frank Schilling launched his parking company Internet Traffic (now under the Domain Name Sales branding) in 2011, he won a considerable amount of business away from competitors. At the time, many early adopters reported a rise in PPC revenue, which was a change from years of declining PPC earnings.

In May of 2011, I reported that Internet Traffic was quickly gaining steam, according to DailyChanges.com. In August, I reported that Internet Traffic may have passed Domain Sponsor in terms of the number of domain names parked on the IT nameservers.

According to a note I received from Frank Schilling this morning, “this past weekend we became the largest parking/sales company both in traffic and name count.” I was told that Domain Name Sales now has over 2.5 million domain names on its parking platform, including .com, .net, .org, and ccTLD domain names. You can have a look at the DNS count for InternetTraffic.com, bearing in mind that Frank’s company, Name Administration, has its domain names are parked on 15x.net and hostingnet.com nameservers.

This remarkable growth trajectory is likely due to the consistent PPC revenue earnings coupled with the robust sales platform the company offers its customers at no additional cost. The upcoming launch of the Uniregistry domain registrar on February 28th will almost certainly add to the number of domain names on the company’s platform.

Congratulations to Frank and his team on the accomplishment.

  1. I saw a significant jump in EPC when I started with DNS (versus what I was getting at Sedo). The past few months though the EPC has gone down significantly at DNS (at least for me) basically a smidge above what I was getting at Sedo. Heard some other comments about this happening to others too. Wonder what happened. Did DNS give an extra % to people to get them on board and now has changed that down or has Google lowered their payouts or?

  2. @Anti-career. I have heard many old-school domainers complain about earnings falling at Internet Traffic starting in the fall of 2013.

I did not see that big drop like others did for some reason, but I did see a drop starting in late December and continuing until now, especially on select domains. I can however say that have done numerous tests on other parking platforms and I can’t beat the Internet Traffic payouts currently. The other platforms seem to have taken the same hit, so I am assuming this is just a Google thing directly tied to their updates to parking that happened for all parking companies on October 1st. Supposedly these changes are supposed to make us more money going forward, but we have all heard that rhetoric from Google before.

    • I think testing is very important.

I don’t make enough from PPC to make it worth testing. Even if my revenue doubled, we’re talking $xxx/month in revenue, and the time it would take isn’t worth it to me.

  3. I was approved last year but never made the transition away from Voodoo, I plan on moving my top earners to DNS for a test run, if revenue is drastically better then I’ll move the rest.. For me it’s more about trust, I was ripped once when I moved to domainspa so I’m always reluctant to try new parking companies.

  4. DNS is the best system I have used. Yes the ppc is down since the end of last year but sales inquiries for generic .com’s and cctld’s are up, up, up. Even my idn.com’s are making some $$!!
The professional landing pages I am sure are the reason. First Class System, imo.
    Thanks Frank and team!!!

  5. It is not simply the platform for PPC earnings going down, it is a smarter internet user, that is starting to figure out these are not links for them.

PPC revenue has been steady, I have had some 2 digit clicks on the platform, but if you have sites that generate great PPC, you might think about developing them out if they are not meeting your potential. Majority of these names were lost from sedo, as they made a deal with godaddy, which now proves to be fatal.

  6. While I am a satisfied user of Frank’s platform, I do not believe this claim is accurate. There are other parking companies with more than 2.5 million domains (keep in mind many arge customers at parking cos have custom nameservers). And from a marketplace, DNS is still much smaller than both afternic and sedo.

Again, nothing against Frank and DNS, I just don’t think the statement is true.

  7. We make way more money with Donny at Voodoo.com, DNS is not for me they seem to be paying out a much lower % overall for ppc, after luring people in with higher payouts which is typical.

  8. While ppc may vary from company to company, DNS sales pages and management system is the best I have found. Also the option to pull a site from ppc and just have a slick lander has never been better. I think a big reason for more sales inquiries has been because the landers are VERY professional. ppc as a rev stream is dead imo. Lead gen partnerships would be a nice addition as I have noticed some of my loan, finance and insurance names in all languages bring in the most $$. Partnering directly with banks, loan and insurance companies would be great. Gargoogle doesn’t want anyone but them to be successful at anything imo.

  9. So what I gather is; Domains with resale potential, DNS is the place to park, Traffic domains with low resale potential, Voodoo is the place to park, And if you have both Traffic and resale, DNS.

Does anyone know if you have killer generic domains in your portfolio, does DNS search these out and make buy offers to the owners?. I cant think of one reason why they wouldn’t.

  10. I guess it’s conceivable there are some bigger guys warehousing large volumes of trademark typos, but of the parking co’s you can actually talk about, we’re bigger than say a SEDO at the moment. We too split across multiple name servers. Ultimately I guess none of that matters, what really matters is where we’re all going next. Donny at Voodoo has always done well at straight parking – we basically let Google optimize and pay out nearly all of it. You can try to game the traffic to wring another dollar here and there but in the mix there are downsides as well, more names get fail-listed other issues.

What we haven’t done well in the past is monetize the unsupported traffic and backfill, but that’s about to change later this month.

By far the largest problem has been the decline in traffic-volume as a result of browser shaping, some of the blocking services restricting visitors to parked names. That sort of thing. Getting traffic is a constant battle.

oh and BullS – nobody got fruitcake this year, so we could pay out more ; ) Beware large gifts. You paid for them.

    • I was specifically thinking about Sedo, because as of its latest public filing (Sept 30 numbers) it had 4.1 million parked domains, whereas this article says DNS has about 2.5 million.

I agree with you, I don’t think being the biggest is the most important thing when it comes to parking or sales. I think the selling point of DNS is how it combines sales and parking. Most other domain parking companies don’t do a good job of this.

Keep up the good work, Frank.

    • @Frank Schilling,

As the beginning of the next month, is there any update towards the monetization of unsupported traffic and backfill?

  11. A lot of it comes down to how many names are active.. we’re 5mm names loaded on the platform. Many have expired or are resolving to competing services. I’d be interested to see how many of Sedo’s 4.1mm are expired or resolving to others.

  12. we tried some parking companies and now we stop at Voodoo …DNS maybe the biggest parking company now when a great quantities of parkers move from Sedo to DNS

  13. Nice of you to chime in Frank, If you can answer my earlier question I’d appreciate it, Do you search out and acquire domains from DNS clients?

    Thank you

  14. No Raider – I do not. I suppose I could but I have been very pre-occupied with building a sales machine, building a registrar and building a registry.

  15. My very first name was purchased in 1987.
I built a nice portfolio over the years of just under 500 premium keyword rich names.
