Grid.com Sold for $275,000 via Sedo

Sedo domain broker Dave Evanson is reporting that he brokered the sale of Grid.com for $275,000. With a creation date of 1992, Grid.com is one of the oldest domain names created. At the present time, the sale of Grid.com will rank in the top 15 domain sales of 2011.

The Whois listing for the domain name now shows a “Nicole Hutchings” as the registrant. I reached out to the phone number in the Whois database to ask how Grid.com will be used, and I reached a voicemail for someone with a different name. Upon further research, the phone number appears to be connected to a person named Amy, and based on a LinkedIn profile for that person, it looks like she might work for a social gaming company.

I am awaiting a return phone call and email to see if the phone number in the Whois database is incorrect or to confirm that the buyer was the gaming company. Whatever the case is, congratulations to the buyer, seller, and Sedo on a nice sale.

The domain name currently resolves to a GoDaddy landing page.

  1. Awesome job Dave!

Keep on hitting them out. Dave and I exchanged a few emails last year and one of the honest brokers around unlike a few around

Congratulations and now that your rolling along – dump sedo and go independent imo. Sedo needs you more then you need them imo.

  2. I know there was a story behind Grid.com, I just cannot find it at the moment. I had read a long time ago about someone asking if they could have the name Grid.com for free or at a low cost from a IT tech of a large multinational corporation.

Can anyone find that story somewhere? One clue is a founder or a VC had owned it… I think.

  3. Price is consistent with recent zero.com – $330K and zip.com – $1m sales. Basically startups are starting to pay $300K+ for really short cool-sounding words. Really cool-sounding and 3-4 characters is the key to value; there ain’t too many of those around, prob less than 50 words like that can be acquired.

  4. Also Windows, SoftGrid and App-V are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation.

In addition to XBox Grid computing is a different approach to Cloud Computing. Very hot at Microsoft and recently $3billion invested in it by IBM.

  5. I’d love to see this go to a startup with a cloud/grid computing hybrid product.

With the right marketing it could be a game changer in the cloud space, with companies referring to putting something on ‘the grid’ as commonly as we refer to ‘googling’ something.

  6. They say the future of computing is in the Grid not the Cloud- could be a very big name in this application and a lot of news this week about a Grid super computer that will collaborate computers to solve world problems- but there is also news o a location-base Foursquare type social media mobile ad server called the grid.au by Vodaphone

  7. What does a sale like that mean for the value of other extension domains of this keyword? Are other grid domains ranked higher now or the other way round, in risk of litigation if they happen to step on some giant corporation’s toes?
