Heritage Auctions Gives Auction Update

Aron Meystedt, Director of the Domain Name and Intellectual Property Department at Heritage Auctions, shared an update about the company’s domain name auction that will be held in San Francisco later this month. The April 19th auction will feature 42 domain names.

In addition to the marketing materials that are being distributed by HA, the auction also received some additional press. CNet published an article yesterday about the auction of Quick.com, “the 85th name taken once domain name registrations were opened up to the world.”

Here’s the update Aron shared, which includes information about the domain names that are up for auction, information about bidding, and he offered a peak at some of the marketing materials that are being used to promote the auction:

As you may know, a goal of ours here is to bring in NEW buyers to the domain industry.
With that in mind, we just sent out:

*** An email describing benefits of premium domains for investment and branding, along with a list of the names at auction, to our top 8000 clients by net worth!

*** We just sent out 10,000 of these post cards highlighting the main auction names along with a brief educational piece (on the back). This went to high net worth buyers, entrepreneurs and other notable people.

HA Domain Auction

*** We just sent out 5000 of these brochures, below, to high net worth clients, entrepreneurs, investors and other notable buyers

We have several other pieces in the pipeline including an ad in the SF Chronicle, an ad in the NY Times and other direct mail and email efforts. Our big PR piece is going out in the next day or two. It will be sent to
our contacts at major media in tech, finance and investing. We have Timeless.com and Snowboard.com both highlighted on the HA.com homepage, which is HUGE to have
a major auction house promote domain names on their homepage. The goal is to bring in NEW buyers to the industry. We’ve sold many names to new buyers at this point already.

I hope to see you at the auction, if you live close to our San Francisco office. We will have a small networking hour prior to the auction with hors d’oeuvres which starts around 11AM. Proxy bidding lasts until April 19th at 11AM Pacific Time.
The live auction, with integrated online bidding, opens two hours later at 1PM Pacific / 4PM Eastern. You can bid online or in person.

Please view the full auction list at http://HA.com/1230 and place bids on those names you may have interest in. We worked hard to find great names, priced well, for this sale. If you have any questions on reserve pricing, let me know.
There is a buyer’s premium, which is marked on the bid page, so bid accordingly.

Thank you!

  1. Hello everyone.

Yes, TitanSilver.com is owned by a loyal client and is sold at no reserve.
We cross promoted that to our coin clients – just to get them to express interest in domains, and sign up for domain alerts. It will go cheap, but I am trying to push domains (at any value) to our other categories. We put a full page notification about the domain auction in our coin, currency, wine and luxury catalogs over the past two months. Cross promotion has led to several sales in the past. Those other categories are HUGE – hundreds of thousands of clients. Anything I can do to get in front of them is desired. We also have Timeless.com and Snowboard.com on the HA.com homepage. We also sent the physical mail pieces to our highest net worth buyers, along with an email about domain investing and values.

Also, yes, there is a buyer’s premium – standard across all mainstream auction houses. The last line of my email (above) clearly says we have a buyer’s premium, so bid accordingly. This BP covers our extensive marketing and PR efforts, which are a feature of using a large auction house. The BP is clearly marked as you bid, and, unfortunately it is mandatory. Even the executives pay the BP when they buy an item through Heritage. Bid accordingly. Pretty simple.

Rick – WCM.com is a great name, priced VERY well! It’s one of the best LLL names out there, and the reserve is in the 30’s. It’s a steal. GMK.com has a reserve in the 20’s! Two great deals there.

We are transparent with reserve prices. One week before the live auction, we’ll post the actual reserve price on each item. No secrets here. Full transparency.

Thanks again Elliot, for the post.

  2. Charge the sellers a commission, and then a buyers premium?

What the hell for, is there a physical asset to display, transport, move, or guard, get with the program, this joke of a charge is exactly what the internet was designed to do! BYPASS traditional pass the buck upcharges, When you say reserves in the 30’s you add 15% and it jumps to $40’s real world number.

    Waste of time, pass!

  3. Be interesting to know how many domainers, real domainers buy and pay a 15% fee, ouch. These lists and auctions, who are they for really, more or a vehicle for us to sell, not buy.
