Host a Domain Name Buying Party

I would think that most people in the domain space believe that just about everyone should own a domain name. Small businesses, politicians, bloggers, and others tend to appreciate owning the exact match .com domain name of their business or personal name. Many families even register the domain name of their baby shortly before or after birth. I had an idea about hosting  a “domain name buying party” for friends to buy domain names and receive affiliate revenue as a result.

The idea is pretty simple. Someone invites friends and family over to discuss domain names. The host then shows people how to register domain names at a specific domain name registrar, using their affiliate code. The host would get affiliate revenue for each registration, and they’d likely be paid for renewals, too.

This idea might sound out there, but I thought of it a couple of  days ago after my wife came home from some sort of product MLM party at a friend’s house. Instead of selling jewelry, crafts, knives, cleaning products, or whatever other “stuff” people are selling to their friends and family, perhaps selling domain names with an affiliate code would be a good idea to earn some extra income.

I have no idea if this is viable on a larger scale, but it’s an idea that could be used to build an income stream, especially since domain name ownership is important. I personally hate the idea of actually doing this, so this is not something I would consider for myself. However, for someone looking to build a revenue stream in the domain space, perhaps this idea is of interest since there are lots of people doing it in other industries.

What do you think? Is this a good idea or is it crappy?

  1. Reminds me of the Mary Kay parties my ex wife would put on at our house.
She explained to me how she was going to make BIG money and soon she would be driving a pink Cadillac.
Years later i sold boxes of that stuff at a garage sale.

  2. A domain buyiing party – just my opinion but I believe one would have to invite folks over to watch the Super Bowl or National Championship game and maybe at halftime you could have a breakout session to talk about domains. Otherwise IMO noone will show up.

  3. I think that one of the biggest drawbacks of a domain-buying party – in contrast to the other examples – is that your potential profit is pretty limited. The margin is pretty low and it’s pretty unlikely anyone will buy more than one.

  4. The party would be going great until you told them the domain they want is 30 grand. Then they would hang you from your ceiling fan.

It would probably work if domains are not the key attraction to the party. Maybe a business party teaching the basics of business, incorporating, marketing and domains. Make it a small business approach to starting their own business and you will have a packed house.

    • That’s also a good idea…

Regarding the cost – I was thinking about hand registrations. ie FirstNameLastName.com types of domain names that many people don’t own but should.

One of my parents friends is a state senator and she didn’t own her .com name. I bought it for her a few years ago and finally gave it to her recently as she is running for re-election. It had been forwarding to her website for a while but I thought it was best for her to own it.

  5. But on the other hand a domain party could be very profitable.
Think about it, got a good ball game going, get a few drinks under your belt and if Elliots is there and has a good buzz going, you could get petaccessories.com or eventmanagement.com on a real good deal.
