How I Used LeadRefs.com

I wrote a post yesterday recommending LeadRefs.com as a source to find potential domain buyers. I want to share some additional insight and information to help you potentially close a deal.

First off, it may or may not be okay for you to send multiple email messages trying to sell domain names to people you don’t know. I am not a lawyer, and I am not going to interpret any laws that may or may not exist in your locality. I am personally opposed to sending bulk, untargeted, and unpersonalized spam emails.

That said, I think the best possible domain acquisition prospects are people and/or companies who already own descriptive domain names. They either realized  certain types of keyword domain names have value back in the day or they recently bought them, which may even be better. They likely don’t need a big sales pitch or any sales pitch at all to sell them a good domain name that will fit within their business strategy.

More important than the leads are the domain names and prices. You can have the best sales letter, but if you’re trying to sell a crappy, hyphenated .info domain names for $5,000, it’s not going to work. I almost exclusively use exact keyword .com domain names when I am trying to find a buyer. I don’t try to do lead generation for brandable domain names or call to action names.

I try to keep my email simple and to the point these days. I might write something like this:

I am the owner of xxxx.com, and I thought your company might be interested in purchasing it. The price of xxxx.com is $x,xxx, and payment can be made using Escrow.com or an escrow service of your choice. I am offering this domain name to several companies, and the first to agree to the price will have the opportunity to purchase xxxx.com.”

I think prospecting for buyers is a very good way to sell domain names. Companies that already own solid descriptive domain names that are similar to yours make great prospects.

    Thank you for pointing out this service. I used zfbot but i have to get the emails one at a time and leadrefs saves a ton of time. also for now you can only do 15 queries per day. I tried yesterday and hit the limit and i emailed leadrefs and they promptly replied and said it will change in the future. Anyway Thanks again!

  2. Elliot, thanks for letting us know about this. It’s a cool service. They must have some kind of tracking in the background though. If I type just one letter of a domain it lists some of my other domains (ones I’ve never searched using their service nor browsed to). I’m thinking they match the incoming IP address to one of the searches’ admin email, then pull a report and populate against that IP address. Anyway, I like it.

  3. It is cool. I entered a LLLL dot com and found two companies on the opposite ends of the earth using their country code with an exact match for their name brand. I did not know there was a .co.il
    We will see…

    I send out individual emails and try to address the recipients by name. It may save time to send out emails in bulk but the response rate is higher when I send them to individuals, especially when I address them by name.

    I knew if I sent enough emails, someone would respond. I closed my first deal today using LeadRefs.com. It was the fastest deal I’ve done so far. Thanks again.

  6. Should also note that querying against your domain to find leads will “whois” said domain. So if you watch your whois counts in Godaddy or another registrar it will be +1 because of the LeadRefs tool.

  8. I already knew about Leadrefs it is very easy to use and i sold some domains with this tool.
    The problem is that sometimes my email service is sending my emails as Spam.

    Maybe because i´m sending it like Bcc and sending for 10/15 at one time.

    I have to try to solve this problem.
    If anyone knows how to guarantee that it is arriving to the recipient´s inbox, please tell me.

    I was very sorry to see LeadRefs shut down 10/19/12, it was a great tool. Do you know of any similar services available or if another company is relaunching LeadRefs? I wasn’t sure if the software was acquired or just shut down.
