LadderGolf.com: Great EMD Example

LadderGolf.comOver the Fourth of July weekend, we had a BBQ for a group of friends and their families. We had  a bunch of lawn games set up, including a game of ladder golf. To make a long story short, we bought the ladder golf game from one of the big box stores at the last minute, and the quality sucked.

I enjoy playing ladder golf on the beach, and I thought it would be a good idea to find a good quality ladder golf set for the next time we have people over. I did some searching and ended up seeing who owns LadderGolf.com. As one might expect, LadderGolf.com is a website that sells ladder golf sets as well as spare and replacement parts and pieces.

I love the idea of LadderGolf.com. The exact match domain name is perfect for the product it sells. People who visit LadderGolf.com or see LadderGolf.com know what to expect when they type it in to their browser. It’s simple to remember, allowing people to see a ladder golf game set up in someone’s backyard or on the beach and recall it when they get home to buy one.

Of course a big question people might ask is how the website ranks in Google. I did a Google search for “ladder golf” and LadderGolf.com has the first two search results. Can’t really get much better than that.

I always like to find great examples of exact match domain names being used, and LadderGolf.com is a perfect example. There are many others that can be cited, but it looks like they are making the most of this EMD.

Also, bonus points to them for securing the exact match @laddergolf Twitter handle!

  1. Can’t beat EMD.

Elliot, you mentioned licensing once in 2012, but I’ve never seen you mention it since (though I haven’t been reading your site that long).

“It is interesting to note that the company has a licensing agreement for the domain name, although terms of the license weren’t disclosed in the press release. A license agreement is another type of deal domain owners can use to generate revenue on their domain name.” – https://www.domaininvesting.com/marijuana-inc-changes-its-name-to-hemp-inc-gets-licensing-rights-to-hemp-com/

What I have seen, however, is some degree of lamenting over sales. Celebrating too, yes, but I would also say a little bit of lamenting too. No matter how good some of one’s domains, plain vanilla sales may not always materialize as rapidly as one would like.

But a number of your domains are great, and you have had suitors.

    So…

Why not licensing? It really does seem that you (and most people) just want the good sale. But some of yours are certainly good enough to license. Which of course spells revenue.

Stallion.com – what a great candidate that would be for licensing.

So here’s what I would like to see: comprehensive treatment of the topic of licensing domain names. Michael Cyger did a really bang up super video and post about leasing with Zak Muscovitch I only recently discovered, and I say it’s high time someone tackled licensing from top to bottom.

Travels.com – I smell a big revenue opportunity in licensing vs. only a sale there too, don’t I?…

  2. Embrace.com – another no-brainer huge and perfect candidate for licensing vs. only a sale. May even be worth more that way long term.

  3. John – The licensing / leasing has been tried and tried (myself included) without much success as far as I can tell. A few years back Rick made a ton of noise about it, talked about how incredibly successful it was going to be – and I haven’t hear a peep since.

    • Gordon, I really get the impression that success is happening out there, but that people are simply not talking about it.

Just look at what Michael Cyger and Zak Muscovitch did here only a year ago re leasing:

“Everything You Need to Know About Domain Name Leasing (Including Example Agreement) – With Zak Muscovitch”

      http://www.domainsherpa.com/zak-muscovitch-leasing/

From what Zak Muscovitch says in the interview, there must be quite a lot of leasing going on.
