Malibu Times Reports Malibu.com is for Sale

According to the Malibu Times (found at MalibuTimes.com), the Malibu.com domain name was listed for sale by its owner. This can be confirmed by visiting Malibu.com, where the domain name owner has set up a “for sale” landing page with information about submitting an offer.

I don’t believe this is the first time Malibu.com has been offered for sale. According to an article in DomainGang.com, the domain name was listed for sale via Ryan Colby’s Outcome Brokerage in 2014.

Since the domain name was likely listed for sale before, the most interesting aspect  of the Malibu Times’ report (in my opinion) is how much a Councilman for the City of Malibu is trying to get the council to approve to make an offer to buy Malibu.com. From the news report  mentioning that Malibu.com is for sale:

“One of the parties sniffing around is the City of Malibu.

Councilman Skylar Peak is asking his colleagues to approve bidding up to 5 thousand dollars for the premium Internet real estate. “

I don’t think that will get the job done.  In fact, I offered to buy Malibu.com for $25,000 in 2008 and I never even received a response to my offer.

Malibu, California is a beautiful city with a thriving real estate market. I am sure the owner will see some strong offers to buy the domain name.

  1. Larry Ellison the billionaire of Oracle fame is slowing acquiring ALL of the beachfront properties in Malibu. He also owns a whole island in Hawaii. He should buy Malibu.com

  2. LOL @ “Councilman Skylar Peak is asking his colleagues to approve bidding up to 5 thousand dollars for the premium Internet real estate.”

With all due respect, Mr Peak has no clue about how premium names/brands are valued … 😉
Malibu.com is a 6 figures name, no doubt, where in the 6 figures depends on many factors.

    • Don’t think so, 6 figures is appropriate.
Check comp sales, possible uses and potential end users and you’ll see, there is no buyer at 7 figs for this domain, sorry.

    • @Dan,
Comps are just a part of the equation … Malibu is both a Geo name (just an example, LongIsland.com went for 370k, Daytona.com for approx 150k) but also a great brand. 🙂

    • You guys generally have this one big major weakness: you look at it as “domainers,” as sellers. I evaluate domains primarily as the kind of person to whom everyone is trying to sell to begin with, as an end user. Selling is only secondary to me; end use is primary. And as an end user this domain is worth seven figures.

It’s all about the real estate industry in that area, plain and simple. It would be well worth seven figures to those at the top of the food chain in that industry and region.

    • @John:
Sorry, but you are talking to someone who’s used to work with and for end users in various industries.
As such, possible uses of a name are very relevant to us.
Maybe you should get informed before making wrong assumptions about people you are talking to, and who clearly you don’t know.
That said, I don’t see any buyer in the Real Estate industry paying 7 figures for it.
No offense, but talk is cheap … if you know a 7 figures buyer why don’t you introduce him to the seller? … 🙂

    • In your previous post you made wrong assumptions about our knowledge of the end user market. Unfortunately for you, we are not newbies. Cheers. 🙂

  3. I could see an agent / broker do it… not that I have any pull or influence at that level. I looked online and there were many 20-50 million dollar properties in malibu. At a couple of percentage points on a transaction at those levels it could pay for itself in one deal at $1,000,000 which is a lot of times the roi an agent measures an advertisement on. It would take a very forward thinking agent or brokerage operating at a very high level to jump though. Many of the biggest and most established agents / brokers wouldn’t understand nor care to, imho.

    • I agree Dan. In order to make Malibu.com work, to pay a seven figure price tag, a broker would need to be from the Malibu area and also be a savvy domainer. You would think a broker would understand the similarities but they are hard to find and I get the feeling the current owner has already reached out to the real estate firms.

    • I don’t see any real estate agency/broker doing it for 7 figures.
The fact that there are “many 20/50 million properties in Malibu” does not necessarily imply that an agency/broker would be willing to pay 7 figures for it …
That’s the difference between theory and market reality, folks … 🙂

    • I know one real estate broker that recently paid seven figures for a great geodomain 🙂
They are out there but not in every town. Malibu is relatively small. In regards to real estate and geodomains, sometimes it pays to look a adjacent areas for prospective end users. Malibu.com is a single word destination with a lot of appeal.

    • Michael, which geodomain are you talking about? name? price? 🙂
I was referring only to Malibu, which, as you correctly said, is quite small.
No doubt Malibu is an appealing name, but IMHO 7 figures is too much.
I think bigger locations, with large touristic flows and/or larger real estate markets, etc. can definitely fetch 7 figures with the right buyer.
We are working, among others, on a very similar name, PalmBeach.com, and I’m sure you know Palm Beach is a very wealthy spot, but it’s small as well.

  4. Stories like this and these types of names at why I still think the real value is not there yet and we will see much high prices to come. There are likely many people in Malibu who could easily afford to spend 6-7 figures on this name if they so desired. All it will take is a smart one to see the value. I mean they literally blow 6 figures on depreciating things with 4 wheels steady.

  5. There’s some irony here in debating the market value of Malibu.com. Objectively, there’s no real reason why property in Malibu should have the cachet it has. Yet market value is a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy after awhile. In this industry, we still have a long way to go toward establishing market values for quality domains in general. Metaphorically speaking, we can still raise the property values from Malibu circa 1917 to Malibu 2017. Same land then as now.

  6. Geo URLs are regaining momentum now that more Iphone and less laptop users
with technology advances. Depending on the GEO Location and TOURISM/INDUSTRY
leases seem to fair well. Also dependings on the Sites Feeds And Data.
Creating Subdomains For All Business ANd Allowing Them To POST & HOST Without
having to manage a Monthly Server Acct etc can be very lucrative.

Three GEO URLs are for sale in FLORIDA
Not Just The URL but the Operational Sites
