Marijuana.com Sold for $4.20 Million

As the end of the year draws closer, another great descriptive domain name has changed hands for a Ā significant Ā amount of money. Shortly after I reported Aftermarket.com’s sale of Order.com, the 6th largest public sale of the year, Ā TechCrunch reported Ā that Marijuana.com was sold for Ā $4.20 million. Of course, “420” is a popular number amongst marijuana smokers.

The domain buyer is WeedMaps Media, Inc., an entity of the publicly traded Ā General Cannabis, Inc. The acquiring company is keeping the popular forum that exists on Marijuana.com, so it likely won’t be treated as a domain sale. The press release announcing the sale mentioned that the forum has over 300,000 registered users and has been online since 1995.

At the end of October 2010, the New York Times had an article discussing the increasing popularity of marijuana-related domain names. In the article, it mentioned that Marijuana.com had been purchased for more than one million dollars back in 2004: “ Ā The New Jersey company that paid over $1 million for marijuana .com in 2004 says it has turned down five offers for more than $2 million for the domain in the last 12 months.”

It looks like a very smart acquisition for a company that wants to be the main source for Marijuana information online.

  1. Elliot,

I have two good domain names related to marijuana. They are marijuana.me and syntheticmarijuana.com I’ve already received some offers in the past on both of these domains. In your opinion should I contact the company that purchased marijuana.com and see if they are interested in obtaining them? If so, how would you approach them? Thanks

  2. Smart move by General Cannabis Inc. Maybe not technically a domain sale but the name is the major factor in the sales price. At least whenever weedmaps takes over marijuana.com, they will get rid of all the “legal bud” ads, that stuff is terrible.

  3. Thanks for the blog post. My advice is to develop out the domains to rank organically, then try to sell. I bought PotStores dot con last year and created a basic marijuana directory. It needs some tlc but at least it is indexed and moving up in ranking for popular keywords such as pot doctors, medical pot, pot stores, etc.

  4. I been getting offers on my sites also’

  5. This name sold way too cheap, seller was obviously desperate to let it go for this low of a price. 300k members and millions of page views with the best domain in the industry should command at least triple this price. Keep giving them domains away guys!

  6. Just wanting advise on the strenght of these names

    BUYITLEGALLY.COM
    CANNABISLEGISLATION.COM
    EXTREMEPOT.COM

    PRESCRIPTIONTHC.COM
    WEEDLEGISLATION.COM
    XTREMEPOT.COM

  7. We have quite a few premium domains to choose from. Especially in the up and coming travel sector. Please let me know your thoughts. I believe we have some of the better names out there.

  8. I am thinking of selling these domains.
    Tokebook.com and Rollagram.com
What sites would you suggest to sell them…I’m not in a rush and I know they are unique and very marketable premium domains. I have had them for a while now but I’m might be swayed to sell them for the right price.
