Memorial Day Weekend Updates

One of the nicer things about this business is that I can take a day off whenever I feel like it. Yesterday, I decided I would do some of the easier landscaping stuff around the house (mulching). I bought 5 cubic yards of mulch, a wheelbarrow, and a pitch fork. I am totally regretting it today. My back is sore, my arms are sore, and I didn’t even finish the job. There is a first and last time for everything.

If you’re in the US, I hope you enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and don’t forget the meaning behind the holiday. Here are some updates, thoughts, and a bit of advice for good measure.

  • Michael Castello published an article on DomainInvesting.com that I think is worth a read. I appreciate that Michael shared his article here, and I hope he is willing to write more in the future.
  • I don’t know about you, but I’ve been receiving more emails than ever trying to sell me .CN and other ccTLD domain names that match a .com that I own. Thanks, but no thanks. Luckily Google has been catching most of these in the spam filter.
  • Andrew Allemann of Domain Name Wire published a (free) guide to selling domain names on marketplaces, and it’s certainly worth a read. You have to sign up to receive it via email, and you can do that here.
  • Domain investors need to realize (I am sure most already do) that the new gTLD domain registries are in business to make money. It is generally in their best interest for them to ensure their domain names are being developed, used, and marketed in order to spur growth, but they are under no obligation to do anything for domain registrants. Perhaps gTLD investors should learn about the registry before buying these names as investments to see how they will market their domain names and ultimately add value (or not) to the domain names.
  • I wish DomainTools’ Domain Monitor tool would allow me to monitor some of the new gTLD domain names. Right now, it only monitors .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and .us domain names.
  • It may be a bit on the longer side at around 45 minutes, but when you have a chance, you will want to watch this Gary Vaynerchuk Β interview about sales and hustling. If you sell domain names, having some sales experience is important. This is a great video you will enjoy watching.

  1. Regarding .CN offers, I have been receiving quite a few of those as well for domains I own but even for Spanish domains I have in .Net or .TV. Can you imagine a Spanish .CN πŸ™‚

  2. Domain investors need to realize (I am sure most already do) that the new gTLD domain registries are in business to make money.!!!!!

    Best statement ever!!

“(I am sure most already do)”—- ha ha tell that to DomainPick

I am still a proud rich owner of no new GTLDs

    • I second that, at first i was watching all the new extensions that were coming out, then going threw the search to see what i could find that was left on the table. but Just for the hell of it, not that i would buy any.
Now i don’t even care or look to see whats out, i could care less.

  3. BullS,

I am the mulch master. I run 13 miles this morning. Worked all day in the hot sun and plan on laying down SEVEN yards of mulch this evening. Then I’ll write my daily list. And THAT is why Elliot is a better domain investor than me

  4. I understand how Elliot feels.
I’m a jack of all trades, and a master of none.
I do plumbing, painting and so on.
Every time i get a call to paint a house, i take the job, but the first few days are brutal, your neck and arms hurt and feel like they are hanging from the bone.
All the prep work before you paint is hard work.
But a week into it, i’m glad i took the job, it gets me out and give me a good work out, gets me off this damn computer for a change.

  5. Your back and arms are sore because you have SOATM, Sitting On Ass Too Much, if you exercised those muscles then it wouldn’t hurt, What you need to do is get up in the morning and go for a run, then do some sit ups and lift some weights, you’ll not only feel better but you’ll look better too, SOATM can also lead to Domainer Obesity which can cloud a domainers thought process resulting in large inventories of GTLD’s πŸ™‚

    • LOL…. It’s the muscles I never use – lower back and lower arms.

I run on the treadmill quite a bit, and I am biking 30+ miles a week these days.

My wife is a runner and makes sure I stay in shape πŸ™‚

    • In addition to your biking and treadmill, do some resistance training (weights) a few days each week. Nothing heavy, but enough to feel it. If you think you’re in shape now, do this for a year then report back to us…it will make a tremendous difference, including making your cardio workouts more fruitful.

    • That’s a good idea… I was doing some lifting last year, but I put that aside. I get a decent workout lifting and carrying my 2 year old πŸ™‚

Kidding aside, I should probably start lifting again.
