Namecheap Responds to Go Daddy CEO Video: Pledges Donations to Save Elephants

Namecheap logoIn response to the video of Go Daddy CEO Bob Parsons  hunting a “problem” elephant in Zimbabwe earlier this month, NameCheap has made a unique  special offer to domain owners. You can transfer up to 10 .com/.net/.org domain names to Namecheap for just $4.99/each through the end of the day on March 31, 2011 (11:59PM EST). Update: the offer has been extended to 11:59pm EST on April 1, 2011.

In addition to the low transfer price, the company will donate $1.00 for every transfer to the non-profit Save the Elephants organization. You can find out more about this organization on its website, or you can visit the Wikipedia page which has a great deal of information.

To take advantage of the special offer, you need to use coupon code “BYEBYEGD.”  This is actually a money losing proposition for the company, since annual registrations cost them more than the $4.99 it’s charging.

Go Daddy and its president have come under considerable scrutiny for the video which was first posted on Video.me. In addition to comments directed at Parsons on his blog and various other websites, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent him a scathing letter, which was posted on TMZ.

  1. Judging from the 400 comments already left on TMZ.com’s post, I think Go Daddy could loose some business over this elephant.

  2. There are also plenty of supportive posts on TMZ, including mine. If you take a few minutes to think about it, and study how many elephants there are in the country, it seems there is a big overpopulation problem anyway.

I don’t recall this much backlash last year, did I miss it? Granted Bob has an ego and the GD hats was tacky etc., but he played a part in saving the crops and feeding a lot of people.

    My TMZ post
There may well be more humane ways to deal with problem elephants, I have no idea what may have been tried. However say what you will for Bob’s “ego” folks, the elephants were threatening to destroy all of the villages crops. And it was not some trophy kill, it was killed for food. Just like the one he killed last year, all the villagers in the area (well most of them) got food. There was no waste. So in that sense, how is this any worse then killing a chicken or a cow that wasn’t destroying or hurting anyone?

  3. John,

There is no doubt in my mind that Bob Parson did this strictly to go hunting. His “helping” people is bullshit and simply his way of defending himself.

Why is killing an elephant worse then killing a chicken or cow? Technically, it’s not. But, maybe you should do some research on elephants. They’re not some farm animal. They are ONE of FOUR animals who are self aware. The other 3 being dolphins, apes, and HUMANS.

They are extremely emotional creatures who live in families, feel emotional pain, have funeral processions and mourn they’re dead.

On top of that, get your head out of the movies. They’re not overpopulated in Africa. In fact, they’re listed as vulnerable. The reason they have problems with farmers is because farmers are spreading into THEIR homes.

And really? Just TACKY with the GoDaddy hats? Using an animals death and exploiting poor, starving people in a land that’s just one step above North Korea when it comes to their ruler?

    Give me a break.

  4. The upsell King gets it!!
Anyone any idea how much Parsons made out of the registerfly.com debacle?
Anyone any idea how many ripped off regfly customers never got their domains even once godaddy assumeed control?

Parsons paid $1 for every domain it got from regfly and made substantially more out of them (on average)

Theres more than one Elephant in the room !

  5. I am no fan of PETA but this was a very exploitive advertisement for GoDaddy. The scenes of the villagers tearing apart the carcass (wearing his hats!) while they blast AC/DC is especially offensive. He comes off as a conquering hero saving the villagers, when it looks like a ready made excuse to fire on animals. It’s exploitive to the villagers and really really bad PR. Wow.

  6. Parson’s should have stuck to the GD girl controversy’s, because this elephant stunt could come back to bite him in the “rear”…

  7. I am going to transfer for sure over 1000 domains from godaddy in just few months. Some friends of mine have done that already.
Now there are plenty false replies made by bob parson`s people on the internet, so please just look at facts and not allow to make fool of yourself. They will do many thing as its about money, big money.

ps His face`s expression when he sat on this dead elephant
and someone was taking picture says all.

  8. Ps parson extended some promotion, and offer new.
I think this is because of that situation. I got email from him after receiving email from namecheap with their opinion about elephant..
But for me not supporting people like parson and having respect for myself its much more worth than a few bucks
