New gTLD Discussion on Mike Mann’s Facebook Page

Mike Mann has had a successful career in the domain space, and I  consider him to be one of the more knowledgeable people in the business of domain names. As a result, when he says something interesting or controversial, people will engage, discuss, and sometimes debate him.

According to DomainIQ,  Mike’s company (Domain Asset Holdings, LLC) owns hundreds of thousands of domain names, and the vast majority are .com. He has sold a ton of .com domain names (including the BuyDomains business), and he seems to be of the opinion that nothing compares to .com or competes with it.

In the last few days, Mike posted a couple of provocative tweets about new gTLD domain names. The links within the tweets link to his original comments on Facebook, and this has stirred up some debate on his Facebook page in different threads:

I find it particularly interesting when industry veterans such as Paul Stahura (Donuts CEO) and Jay Westerdal share their insight. I may not agree with everything that is being posted, but it is neat to be an observer.

Mike doesn’t always say things in a politically correct manner, and I don’t always agree with what he shares on Twitter, but his comments tend to drive good discussion, and I enjoy following along.

  1. Their insight is flawed by their own personal gain, that is why it is hard to trust anyone who has their hand in the cookie jar so to speak.

Frank Schilling himself called .com the future AM dial, yet they continue to pay up, and purchase them in the open marketplace, I am sure competing against the likes of you at times.

GTLD’s are simply a tease, once you get a taste, you need to go .com, but to many restrictions, to many different operators, there is no true uniformity with them.

Hence a lack of confidence, take .shop they said point blank they don’t want domainers squatting on their extension.

  2. Face it boyz, the New G’s are a giant .fail

Captain Mann is correct when he says that new gtlds are for those who want to go out of business.
