Perfect Usage of a .Christmas Domain

There are a few new domain name extensions I don’t totally understand. Among them is .Christmas, a domain name extension operated by Uniregistry. I didn’t really understand why people would buy a domain name based on a holiday. This morning, my perspective changed a bit.

Michele Neylon, CEO of Blacknight Internet Solutions, sent his annual Christmas card/email this morning. In the email, he referenced his online Christmas card, which can be found at Michele.christmas (previously WhiteChristmas.me). When I received that, .Christmas clicked for me.

During the past week or so, my wife and I have received a ton of Christmas and holiday postcards from friends and family. We’ve always been a bit slow with cards like this, and most of the time it doesn’t end up happening. It gets to the final days and we can either do a last minute card and pay extra for speedy shipping, or we can just skip it like usual. With a .Christmas domain name, it is faster to setup and less expensive than mailing a holiday card, especially when compared to postage. We can also send last minute emails to people we forgot to include on our card list.

I know .Christmas is long compared to .com and most other extensions. With just 3,300+/- domain names registered though, the extension is pretty wide open for people to register short domain names like Michele did.

I never really got .Christmas before, but after seeing Michele’s Christmas card, I get it.

  1. That’s a neat a idea of turning a .Christmas domain into a virtual post card. Just thinking about the time someone will save from writing all them cards is worth the small investment. I was able to pickup a nice name myself Navidad.Christmas I was surprised that it was available.

  2. Ya I am always coming up with crazy domain in new gtld! I have a .christmas too, Mewoy.Christmas! Everyone laughs at me 🙁

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”…okay maybe it won’t be that bad!

    • Yes, our main site is souvenirs, but we redirecting Christmasgifts.nyc and using it in url shortness for promos as well as on our banners and postes. here is example we used on face book.

One of a kind Christmas Wonderland Tree with Big Apple ornament. Handcrafted in NY by master wood carver David Raz.
      Take a Look >>> christmasgifts.nyc/handcrafted-christmas-tree

So we don’t have to change url (which does very well on google), but we can change branding for the season and get different demographic.

  4. Michele Neylon runs a web hosting/domain registrar. He has the technical skills to make his own little digital greeting card.

This isn’t something that would appeal to the general public or something they would do.

PS – I bet your still wants a Holiday Card Eliott. 🙂

  5. I’d much rather get a real Christmas Card from Someone…
I’d feel like I didn’t matter to get a url to an online bulk greeting…
I see a purpose for them but it won’t cut the mustard for people you truely care about sending a holiday greeting to…

I see development potential in some of mine…

    I buy to dev, primarily…
Although I do monthly sales – it’s never my goal goal…

    Happy Holidays to Everyone…

  6. I guess, it’s not a bad idea to get domain name of such extensions. It’s better and easy to remember and when festival comes, such domain names can come in handy. The traffic can skyrockets from nothing to millions in a day and if a site has some unique things to offer, the site visitors might keep on coming even after holidays are over. And again next year same time, they traffic is going to get increased.
