Poll: Tennis.com vs. Golf.com

Golf.com vs. Tennis.comYesterday evening, I wrote about the pending sale of Tennis.com. The domain name, which includes a highly developed business, is part of an $8 million + earn out deal to a publicly traded company.

In the comment section, someone mentioned Golf.com, which is also a highly developed business. That got me thinking about which domain name is more valuable.

From my uneducated perspective, I think people spend more money on golf equipment, travels, private clubs, lessons, and other aspects of the sport. People spend quite a bit of money on tennis as well, but I would imagine the spend is significantly higher for golf. Looking at the basics, a set of golf clubs is far more than one tennis racquet and greens fees + cart rental cost significantly more than court time. This makes me believe there is more money with golf and likely the Golf.com domain name because of advertisers.

Personally, I would prefer to own Tennis.com because I play tennis far more regularly than I play golf. This isn’t based on the value of the assets but rather my interest in the sport.

In the poll below, I am curious what domain name  you think is worth more: Golf.com or Tennis.com. To make it more simple, let’s not even think about the websites / businesses that are on each of these domain names. This is just about the intrinsic value of each url.

  1. Take it from someone who strives to be “pathologically honest”:

Golf.com is easily at the $90,000,000 level we recently learned about for one domain we did not know that about before.

And I used to play tennis years and years ago and loved it, whereas I only played golf maybe once or twice, sucked at it, hated it, and still can hardly believe people like watching it on TV vs. watching paint dry.

  2. Golf is an international word, same spelling in (almost?) every language using Latin alphabet. That doesn’t apply for tennis.

…just another reason why Golf.com is more valued name.

  3. And if Rick Schwartz had golf.com, we’d probably be reading about a 9 figure deal. Maybe not up front, but at least over time. And it would be worth it to the buyer.

  4. tennis is my game. I’ve played it most of my life — college, etc, and I’ve been to all the slams except the Australian — as well as the tournament in Key Biscayne (Liptons, etc) numerous times.

but golf.com is far more valuable — for so many reasons, even though we’re in the Golden Era for tennis right now with Federer, Novak, Murray and Nadal and Serena & Venus.

Tennis could rise again if some phenoms from the USA started winning slams, but I love watching Federer and the Big 3 play the game.

As far as golf — the Masters, British Open, US Open, Ryders — these are pretty special.

Then all the merch, clubs, etc —- golf would seem to have the edge.
