Saturday Morning Thoughts & Updates

Yesterday was a great day! If you follow my Twitter account, you know that the $10,000 Pan-Mass Challenge fundraising goal I set was met yesterday afternoon! With the help of friends and colleagues, we were able to raise $10,000 for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, one of the best cancer research and treatment organizations in the world. There was a ton of domain industry support, and that is sincerely appreciated.

Here are some domain industry thoughts and updates I wanted to share with you:

Earlier this week, I wrote about how I don’t understand why so much money was paid to operate the .Web registry. A couple of friends shared their thoughts about .Web privately with me, and I will admit that I may be wrong about it. Time will tell how .Web is marketed, and we will see how consumers (businesses of all sizes) view this extension with their pocketbooks.

It looks like the owner of TrumpPence.com has set a price for his domain name. According to the landing page, the “Asking price is $475,000 or best offer.” It also says, “Sorry, but we are not considering any 5-figure offers.” It would be interesting to know what types of offers are being submitted. Depending on how the election goes, this name might not be worth very much by the end of the year.

There are only a few spots remaining for the HEXONET / NamesCon cruise in Vancouver next month.

Tomorrow is the last day to buy your NamesCon conference ticket (in January) with 50% of the proceeds benefitting my PMC fundraising ride!

Great crowdfunding campaign started by Kevin Murphy!

Despite the fact that I am not a domain broker, I still receive quite a few emails from people asking me to broker domain names. Sorry, but domain brokering is not something I am interested in doing. There are many great domain brokers though.

Interesting article about Cruise.CO on Sky News: “Luke Johnson’s investment firm is to sell Cruise .co in a deal estimated to be worth £50m” Thanks to Jag Singh for sharing this article with me on Twitter!

  1. As regards Cruise.co, actually CRUISE.co.uk is the website/business for sale, that’s where the business is.
The company to be sold is Cruise.co Ltd, but the business operates two core websites: Cruise.co.uk and Cruises.co.uk.
Cruise.co, briefly online since 2013, just redirects to Cruise.co.uk, as well as does Cruises.co.uk, purchased for 560,000 £ (at the time approx 1.1 mln USD) in 2008.
Risk Capital Partners purchased approx two-thirds of Cruise.co.uk in 2013 for an estimated 15 mln £.
    Cruise.co.uk had revenues for 64 mln £ in 2012.
Cruise.co.uk managing director Seamus Conlon has confirmed the business is seeking new investment from a private equity firm.

  2. Elliot…

Just starting in the past few days, I am no longer getting new post notifications nor the subscription confirmation emails for all blogs, including yours, TheDomains, DNW, and maybe one or two others.

It would seem perhaps there is a problem at the WP end of things? I was able to log into my WP account for this blog profile, and it doesn’t even show the new recent threads I’ve signed up for.

    Anyone else notice that?

    • Not sure the issue. There are two different plugins that are used… one for new articles and one for comments. I am still receiving both, so it could be an email issue?

Hope you can figure out what is wrong.

    • It’s really odd that it would affect all blogs at once. My email address appears to be working fine, and I’ve checked the spam folder. Since I have a hard time believing everyone got so offended by something I wrote that they decided in a smoke-filled room to pull the plug on my email notifications, if that’s even possible, then it would seem to most likely have to narrow down to a problem at the WordPress end. Wish others would post about it in case I’m not the only one. And I will now click the “Notify” box below before submitting this…
