Some Weekly Thoughts and Updates

I don’t know about you, but I am getting excited for the NFL season to begin. It’s nice to be a Patriots fan because the team is almost always very good. The only downside to the beginning of the football season is that it means the Summer is coming to an end.

Here are some domain name thoughts and updates I want to share with you. If you have other industry thoughts and updates, I invite you to share them in the comment section.

The company that acquired the rights to operate the .Shop domain name extension said his goal is to “goal is to reach 1 million registrations within the first year.” I would not bet against this, but it is a pretty big number.

In the two plus years that new gTLD domain name extensions have been available for people to register, there are only four extensions with one million + domain names registered: .xyz, .top, .wang, and .win.

My article about not registering trademark new gTLD domain names is as relevant today as it was two years ago. Just because a company doesn’t register a domain name in their trademark doesn’t mean they won’t come after a domain name owner that does register it without permission, especially when it comes to non-generic trademarks.

The six domain tool websites I use most regularly these days for my business and my blog: DomainTools.com, DomainIQ, Dropping.com, NameBio, UDRPSearch.com, and nTLDStats.com. The first three require paid subscriptions to get the most benefit and the last three are free to use.

I can’t even tell you how many times I have needed the help of company representatives I have met at domain conferences. Networking with other domain investors is beneficial, but when an issue arises at a registrar or elsewhere, knowing the right person to contact can save time. The next conference I am attending is THE Domain Conference next month and then I will be going to NamesCon.

  1. .Shop is certainly one of the few good ones among the new, but they can probably forget about this goal if they are going to price it high like .Gold which is also one of the few good ones and a lot of others that are even much cheaper but which are still far too expensive.

However, I suspect they will probably delude themselves that they can do that and still have their cake and eat it too.

  2. Get ready for a “category killer” .com domain I discovered available for registration not long ago. I will reveal it perhaps in a week or so.
