Sunday Afternoon Industry Thoughts & Updates

I love this time of year. The snow is usually coming to an end for the season, and the weather is starting to get nicer. This week, we are expecting a couple of 60-70 degree days, and I can get back on my bicycle and begin training for the 2016 Pan-Mass Challenge (I am 20% of the way towards my fundraising goal!).

Here are some domain name industry thoughts and updates. You are welcome to share your own in the comment section. Enjoy your Sunday!

For better or worse, I think the best marketers of the new domain name extensions have been the investors who own them. Look around forums and blog posts about various extensions, and you will regularly find people touting them and their sales numbers.

Speaking of that, I wonder what ever happened to the domain blog commenter named Robert Cline.

I recently asked people on Twitter to let me know if they know of any domain investors doing cool things within the domain industry or outside of it. I think it would be more interesting to write about people whose businesses or projects are domain name related, but I find it fun to learn about other projects as well. I have a cool story coming out tomorrow or Tuesday, and I would love to hear about other people who are doing fun things.

After tweeting about that, I learned about a new domain industry newsletter that was recently launched, which can be found at DomainSignals.com. I know nothing about the publisher of the newsletter, but it’s always good to get different perspectives on the business. I just signed up for the free newsletter and will see how it goes.

GoDaddy made this year’s Fortune list of the 100 best companies to work for. It’s not a surprise based on what I hear, but it’s something that is good to know. GoDaddy is #95 on this year’s list.

I am regretting not going to the ICANN meeting in Marrakech. I feel like I need to attend an ICANN conference. I was planning to attend the ICANN meeting in Panama in June, but that was canceled because of the Zika virus.

  1. With my newly minted MBA from the DF-academy, I am earning 6$$$$$$ income and on my way to becoming the CEO if IkAAn.
Pretty soon, everyone needs the domain certification, a prerequisite to be called a domainExpert.

Robert Cline is an name make up by a domainer just like any other DShame.

“the best marketers of the new domain name extensions have been the investors who own them—-SO WHAT NEW ON THIS SCAM!! or people who pimp their own domains to sell in their own blog…

  2. There are those that pump and dump ad then there are those that see the signals and put 2&2 together. Anytime I write about news stories that I did not create, I get feedback that I am promoting a particular extension.

I find it interesting that a domain name investor who believes in an extension and owns names in the extension somehow becomes a promoter of the extension with the goal of pumping and dumping.

I can’t speak for others but I have been domaining since 1997. During a span of almost 20-years, I feel as though sharing trends and information with other domain investors is a healthy thing. If we would stop tagging people as pumpers and truly explore the facts that something writes or blogs about, we might all benefit from it.

Any extension requires promotion and discussion for acceptance. Defining what i hype and what is information is a fine line. I also have a newsletter that focuses on short domains and facts about new extensions. I try to focus on what is fact and then provide commentary on those facts.

Personally, I think it is wrong to label someone’s opinion as being a spammer or promoting a scam.

  3. There is http://www.Meetup.nyc , promoting events around .nyc and NYC.
They got a huge event this Thursday around Link.nyc and while meet up for regular people and investors, it focuses on tech side of nyc and promoting events in conjunction with large places like Chamber of eCommerce, Links, Mayors office.
