Sunday Thoughts and Updates

One month away until opening day for the Red Sox, and I am getting excited. The Sox look strong this year, and if their pitchers are durable, I think they will have a good  season. I am still hopeful that they will get a #1 starter since their rotation seems to be made up of a bunch of #3s.

Speaking of the Red Sox, I am thinking about organizing another Fenway Park meetup this Summer, so if that is something that is of interest to you, let me know.

I am in the process of making this site more mobile friendly. I personally don’t mind the way it looks on my iPhone but apparently it’s not compliant enough for Google. I suppose that is the kick in the butt needed to improve the mobile experience.

Chicago Business Journal reported that Donuts “will begin to heavily promote what it’s billing as the Internet’s next phase — the so-called ‘not com’ era — via a new ad campaign titled ‘Freedom of Choice.‘” I am looking forward to seeing the campaign. With its extensive portfolio of new extensions, Donuts is in the drivers’ seat with the new TLDs, and I am eager to see where the company will be promoting its new extensions and how they are being positioned to consumers and businesses.

There is strong domain industry representation at SXSW this year. Companies that have a solid presence at SXSW this year include  Sedo, Radix, the .Club Registry, .ME Registry, .CO Registry, and I am sure I am forgetting a few. It’s fun to see how these companies are promoting themselves (ice cream, froyo, and grilled cheese are some examples).

Wired wrote about domain names last week, and Sedo’s Dave Evanson got a nice nod in the article.

Minds & Machines  received some good press from Los Angeles Magazine in response to its presence at LA Fashion Week. The Registry is promoting its .Fashion TLD.

I put a bunch of domain names up for sale at NameJet. Many have no reserve price and some have fair reserves. An assortment of the names I listed for sale include the following among others:

  1. At least your listing is better that that guy DS listing.

Donuts should be at SxSW selling various kinds of Donuts.

(time to make the donuts, time to make the donuts, time to make the donuts……gets into your mind…)

    Go Mariners!!!

    • I’ve posted elsewhere and this would be a good place to mention, too, some thoughts on the new .money TLD.

In my opinion, this is one of the few winners in terms of quality, appeal, meaning and usefulness, like .club which is the best of bunch.

One of the reasons why .club is so excellent in terms of how it has been brought to market pertains not only to its intrinsic appeal, but also to its being affordable with pricing resembling what people are used to paying for other major gTLD’s already. .Money, however, is priced far too high for popularity, adoption and traction in my view – despite the intrinsic usefulness, quality and appeal of this extension.

I know Elliot is quite interested in marketing and I am too to some degree. I also had some marketing coursework back in school days. Pricing is one of the critical elements as many people know. While there is occasionally the irony and paradox of an item being priced too low discouraging spending vs. a higher price encouraging spending, situations like that are perhaps fairly rare. The standard pricing for .money in my view falls squarely into the no-brainer common sense zone of simply being too high.

If the pricing for .money was brought into line with what is considered “normal” the way it is for the popular .club, I strongly suspect this one could really take off in terms of popularity, appeal and adoption, as in real commercial use.

  3. Boston is fine even though they beat my Tigers. If anyone who reads your blog is yankee, Laker or cowboy fan they should switch teams or just quit watching sports all together. Most fans that like one of those teams tend to like one at least one of the others also.

This should offend half of your readers.:)

  4. Hi,

Speechwriter.com – nice name. I have Logographer.com (dictionary word). ‘Logographer’ means professional legal speechwriter.

    Best,
    RU

  5. I would definitely make the long trip up to Fenway. Let’s do it! And yes, the Sox starting pitching looks a little too mediocre, unfortunately. But they should be a very fun team to watch with a strong offense. Go Sox! Can’t wait until Opening Day.
