Sunday Updates and Thoughts

The rest of the Summer is going to be a blur. I have a bunch of things scheduled, so I might not respond to emails as quickly as usual. One of the downsides of my business is that I am almost always working while traveling, but I suppose it’s this business that lets me travel. Double edged sword I suppose.

I shared some thoughts and updates below. You are welcome to share your business thoughts and updates, too.

Interested in a job opportunity working with the new gTLD domain names? Rightside his hiring a Senior Manager, Channel Marketing in its Kirkland, Washington office. Here’s a brief excerpt from the job listing, “As a key member of the Marketing team, the Senior Manager, Channel Marketing helps our domain name registry team (i.e. Rightside Registry) globally launch and sell an impressive portfolio of new, top level domains through our channel of registrars and resellers.”

I am always intrigued when I read tweets like this one from Sahar Sarid and the comments that followed on the original Facebook post. Sometimes, I am able to figure out what domain names sold, but when I can’t, I am very curious!

The Boston domain investor meetup is happening on Wednesday July 15 at Bill’s Bar at 5pm. It should be a pretty good crowd.

I understand Media Options has come to terms with buyers on 3 LL.com domain names in the last couple of weeks. Two were brokered and one was from his company’s inventory.

When you have a chance, you should read this great legal article regarding descriptive domain names and trademark holders using UDRP and the legal system to try and acquire domain names.

I am thinking about attending DomainFest in Macau in September. Are you planning to attend? It is being held at the Grand Hyatt Macau September 4-7.

If you have one word .com domain names for sale, let me know! I am still buying great names. Don’t waste your time (or mine) sending made up words or words that aren’t commonly spoken. If you or I need a dictionary to confirm that the word is real, please don’t send it! I am only buying legitimately valuable domain names. If you feel the need to explain what it means or why it is worth anything, I can almost promise you I won’t buy it. Here are some of my current holdings and a few of my company’s sales (all were owned by my company) as reference points of what I buy.

  1. The “great legal article” link: Remove the erroneous quotation mark from the end of the link for it to work. Very good article, btw.

  2. Spent some time this Sunday listening to your sherpa interview.
Wish i had your skill of developing websites.
Last time i tried, it looked like a 2 year old child put it together.

  3. Are domains dying? Is that why Rick S. decided to cash out of p o r n o.com while he could still get a price like that, for example, because he knows this?

    > Are phone apps and SE’s killing domains even while the hundreds of new ones are being released?

    > How many of you have friends and relatives who are not into this world that we are a part of? How many can relate to this almost constantly:

    1. Here it is 2015, and people don’t even know what the browser address bar is, how to find it, how to use it. You can try and try and try with some of them and still have trouble getting them to do this one simple thing, unless perhaps you’re standing right beside them and showing them yourself. Does that make any sense?

    2. How many times have you tried to get people to visit a site by domain name, only to find out that their preferred way of doing things is to only type it into an SE search box, usually Google of course, and they are extremely resistant to any alternative method? Sometimes of course that won’t work and the domain will not appear on page 1 – then what?

Or, alternatively, do you think the new TLD will help usher in a new era of people rediscovering what domain names and the address bar are to begin with, even if they don’t show up on page 1 of SE results yet?

    • I mean, for example – what in the world is going on with this super category killer: http://stocks.com/?

I’ve posted before about how it was no longer even resolving for the longest time. But this domain used to be mentioned online before. Some well known people were behind it. I had even read it was getting 20,000 hits or type-ins a day.

But look at what’s appearing there now that it is finally even resolving at all. Really?

Do people even “type in” any more? Do most people even know how any more?
