Sunday Updates and Thoughts

With Memorial Day behind us, the typically slower Summer months are ahead. I think this is going to be a busy Summer for people in the domain space. Usually, I find that June, July, and August are fairly slow, but I think they are going to be busier than usual. My feeling is that there are segments of domain names that are selling for far more than before, and that is fueling speculation in other areas. This is driving up competition and prices in other areas.

Here are some thoughts and updates for you. If you would like to share some of your own business thoughts or updates, you are welcome to do so. Your comments are also welcome.

There were nearly 200 comments on Friday’s post about favorite domain names. The biggest surprise for me is the number of new TLD domain names that people chose as favorites. I think my personal favorite of names submitted by others is Strawberry.com.

LakeWinnipesaukee.com is now live! There is still a bit of cosmetic work to be done but I am happy with how it looks so far. Once I am satisfied with the look and feel of the website, I will begin to contact prospective advertisers. I will also begin work on SquamLake.com and Sunapee.com in the near future because I can then cross-sell and up-sell advertising.

I am now 50% of the way towards my Pan-Mass Challenge fundraising goal (the most recent $250 donation has not been updated on the page yet). Thanks so much for all of your support. There is still quite a bit of money to be raised though. If everyone who reads this today would donate a dollar or two, I would meet my fundraising goal! A donation in any amount would be appreciated and 100% of all funds donated go directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

I found a scary looking spider in my house yesterday. Apparently, it is a species called a false widow because it resembles a black widow. There was no orange hourglass design on its abdomen, which is what black widow spiders have.

Ron Jackson published a nice article about the team at Igloo.com. Tessa and Amanda receive quite a few emails from me asking about exceptional domain names that I believe they helped to sell. I wish they would comment more about them!

Please don’t ask me about consulting or brokering. I am still not interested in doing consulting nor will I buy/sell domain names on behalf of someone else. There are plenty of good domain brokers and consultants in the business, and I would rather spend my time working on my own business.

Three pieces of advice if you email me to try and sell me a domain name. 1) I am not going to buy a newly hand registered domain name from you. 2) I am not going to buy a new gTLD domain name from you. 3) If you have to explain what they domain name means or why it has any value, I am not going to buy it from you.

  1. Looks like the old domain appraisal scam has reared its ugly head again after a long hiatus. I was particularly amused recently to receive an email purporting to be from an attorney acting on behalf of a client who “needs” one of my nice two-word com’s for a lucrative industry. For a nanosecond it looked like it might be a decent inquiry because this was particularly jazzed up and different from the usual scams of the past, and the appraisal scam hasn’t shown up in my neighborhood for a long time now. Figured the word must’ve gotten out that we’ve been onto it for years. But it became quickly apparent I could probably stake my life on it, especially when the writer asked if I was a “beginner” or experienced in domains sales at the end. So I was particularly amused with my reply:

    “Hello Mr. [Redacted],

I am so experienced that I am even familiar with the so-called “domain appraisal scam.”

Feel free to make an offer or request a price whenever you are ready.

    Regards,
    [Me]”

Perhaps you had to be there, but it was deliciously funny to me. And funny – he hasn’t gotten back to me yet for this domain his client needs so much.

    • Hmm.. got a similar email..for a new gtLD no less.. I was going to reply but after reading your comment…it looks to similar… and Google also didnt like his email address…

I represent a buyer from Spain who needs ______ for a new project.

Are you still interested in selling this domain?

If so, please reply back and we will negotiate the price and discuss the sale process.

Are you a beginner in domain sales or an experienced seller?

      Best Regards,

    • “I would be happy to consider paying the $500 fee for the domain appraisal, but first you must pay a $100 negotiation fee and the will can proceed…” 😀

  2. Okay folks in domain investing land, since this thread is an open forum, I will definitely take this opportunity to say, stop ignoring this topic:

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/internet-governance-follies-1433109242

And don’t tell me you aren’t, because you are. For the most part, that is. The very most big most part.

This issue can profoundly affect not only all our businesses, but life in this world as we know it. It’s right up there with those who work and seek to make domains practically obsolete to begin with, and far above it in terms of potential impact on the world.

    Cheers.

  3. Here’s a few notable quotables from the second article:

“But something truly ominous is brewing on the Internet governance front, something with the potential to affect every one of the billions of people who now use the Internet on a daily basis, and not for the better.”

Well, I should have read this one more completely, as this guy does not actually support continued US control, but I most definitely do. So this article has some merit, but I would certainly disagree with him profoundly on that point.
