Tony Kirsch to Host .brands Webinar

Tony Kirsch is the Head of Professional Services at Neustar and is also the company's .brand Evangelist. According to a tweet from Neustar and a LinkedIn post Tony  shared, Tony and Neustar will be hosting a free webinar series "designed specifically for .brand owners to provide an update on the space and share examples, analysis and best practice."

The first webinar will be held on Thursday, June 1 at 4:00pm Eastern time. Registration is required, so people interested in attending should sign up prior to the start of the webinar. Because of the nature of the webinar, I presume it will be archived and available to review at a later date for people who are unable to attend the live webinar.

How Brands Should Market Their .Brand Domain Names

Having popular brands use .brand domain names for business and marketing is something that is going to help drive awareness of the new gTLD program. I think consumer confusion about new gTLD domain extensions is one of the biggest issues that needs to be overcome. When a brand uses a .brand extension, it needs to be clear that they are promoting a domain name and not using it as a gag (ala the fictitious Booking.Yeah tagline from Booking.com).

Tony Kirsch, the ".brand Evangelist" and Head of Professional Services at Neustar Inc., wrote a blog post advising brands about how to use and market their .brand domain names to avoid confusion. This is a good read for brand managers, but it is also a good read for domain investors who invest in or develop new domain names.

Neustar Launches Stats Hub Tool

neustarThere are quite a few companies that are either using their .brand extension or plan to use their .brand extension. Google has its .Google extension, Barclays has its .Barclays extension, and Saxo Bank has its .Saxo extension, among many other companies.

Earlier today, Neustar launched its Stats Hub product, a new tool for people and companies interested in the .brands space. According to Neustar, "The 'Stats Hub' is an interactive database of statistics on .brand domain usage including domains registered and utilization info (number resolving/non-resolving/redirecting etc), which is also categorized and can be filtered by brand, location, industry to find exactly the data you're looking for."

Neustar Comments on .NYC Auction Results

nyc registryNeustar sold a small portfolio of real estate related .NYC domain names on NameJet, and the auction grossed $70,650 in sales. As one might expect, the top three domain names that were sold in this auction were RealEstate.NYC ($21,300), Apartments.NYC ($16,155), and Rentals.NYC ($5,700).

I do not have any more ties to New York City, so even if I wanted to bid on the auctions, I was not permitted due to nexus restrictions for .NYC domain names. I watched the conclusion of some of the auctions, and it seems that there were at least a few well known New York-based domain investors participating. I am unsure of who won these auctions, but I am interested to see how the domain names will be used.

.CO Hits 2 Million Registrations

Because .CO keeps its registration numbers private, I haven't been able to keep track of how many .CO domain names are currently registered. I just learned that there are now over 2 million registered .CO domain names.

According to a press release I received from Neustar, the company that operates the .CO domain registry, ".CO has surpassed 2 million total domain names under management." Interestingly, the growth rate for new registrations grew from 10 percent in 2014 to 18 percent in 2015. I would imagine quite a bit of this strong growth is due to investment from Chinese domain name buyers. I don't know if there is an easy way to track how much of an impact the Chinese market has had on registration numbers though.

In addition to the Chinese registration component, .CO has been very well accepted in the startup space. My perspective is that there is still a "coolness" factor associated with .CO domain names. Neustar Rings NYSE Opening Bell

Neustar is one of a handful of domain industry publicly traded companies (stock symbol NSR on the NYSE), and representatives from Neustar rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange this morning to open the trading day.  The focus of the event was on the new .NYC domain names, and representatives from the Office of the Mayor of New York City also participated in the bell ringing.

I embedded the video of the NYSE opening bell ceremony, so you can see how  .NYC was promoted at the New York Stock Exchange. Video of the opening bell is generally carried on the financial news networks, and it is often followed by interviews with some of the participants.
