  1. Agree, I think it will sell as lots of potential and great demographics to target with LongIsland.com, would not be suprised if this gets close to 400-500k, perhaps even someone from the print industry will take a liking..

  2. If you could buy a State name, what might it be worth?

If you do the math, LI has a population of about 7.5m and Lowell has about 105k. The next question is would you sell Lowell for 50k? If so, LI might go for more than 1m. The math brings it to 3.5m.

  3. @ Dave

I wouldn’t sell Lowell.com for $50,000 because that’s what I paid and don’t need the cash. I may not be able to sell it for that price because of the economy, but again, I am not looking to sell it.

I think LongIsland.com would be worth as much or more than a state.com. Personally, I would rather own LongIsland.com than RhodeIsland.com.

  4. @Elliot:
I wouldn’t take LongIsland.com over any state name. A state.com is the brand for a state and that is venturing into big bucks territory. I would not go after LongIsland.com. Most of the US/world is not that familiar with it (menton Long Island in CA and they’ll say, “Who?”) and the whole point of buying any Geo is the national/world familiarity factor.

  5. @ David

East of the Mississippi, Long Island is a huge area. IMO, most people don’t say they live in Massapequa or Rockville Centre, they say “I live on Long Island” or “I am from the Island.” There are some incredible homes out there and a whole lot of people.

  6. Agreed, but selling advertising would be a nightmare. I know Long Island quite well. My cousin lives in West Islip and, when we lived in NYC, Michael and I were in a band based out of Rockville Center. Anyone who buys LongIsland.com would need to bult a site that would rival the depth of a state site. And I’d much rather have a state domain. On other hand, I’m curious as to how much direct navigation LongIsland.com receives. That would tell a lot.

  7. Elliot,

I agree with David, I asked the same question, who will be my advertisers? Credit, Long Island is huge, 7.5M population in both Nassau and Suffolk counties but just seems too broad. Thats why I concentrate on the smaller cities like Searing town, Roslyn Heights and Rockville Centre (you probably mentioned Rockville Centre cause you know thaw I own the dot com, thanks). Also, now that I’m reading the comments I see the point that people are making and perhaps the reserve is justifiable.

  8. @ Steve

There are plenty of state .coms that are much more valuable. However, there is more tourism and residential communities on LI than other states – like Rhode Island. If I had a choice of Florida.com vs. LongIsland.com, I would choose choose Florida.com hands down. However, if I had the choice of RhodeIsland.com or LongIsland.com, I would choose the later.

  9. Rick’s team and their sellers have many nice ones at excellent prices.

Of those you’ve listed here, Elliot, I’d go with the CatFood.com as far as the one having the greatest upside at a sale anywhere near the minimum’s 50-75k range.

Though it might take 2-5 years for them to wake up to its importance and value to them, a resale to one of the cat food producers could easily be worth a 5x-10x return on investment.

As for LongIsland.com, it’s looks priced about right to me. David’s points are well taken. I’d certainly take any US state .com over it.

For those who believe it’s worth (far) more, ask yourself: For 400k; which it sold for; would you rather have Long Island . . . or Rio.com?

  10. Personally I think the best bargain in the auction is POS.COM, but I may be biased 😉 Others names I like in the auction are;

    homeowner.com
    meetings.com
    longisland.com
    huntingseason.com
    ragstoriches.com
