Types of Domain Names I am Buying

With as much uncertainty as there is in the domain market these days, I am being more selective about domain names that I buy. As PPC is dwindling, there is less money being reinvested into the domain market by domain investors. Since much of the domain sales market has been fueled by domain investors reinvesting their PPC income, that area of the market seems to be stagnant.   End users are still buying domain names, but as most people know, it’s a tougher sell.
In that vein, I am being more selective about the names I am buying. When I think about buying a domain name, on top of the standard research I do, I ask myself how the name could be developed into a website. If there is no obvious way that a business could be established on that domain name, there isn’t much of a chance I am buying.
I like geodomain names for this reason.   It’s fairly easy to imagine how a city names (in the .com) can be developed into a business.   While it’s not easy to generate sustainable revenue to make a living, knowing what the site should feature is a no-brainer.   Cities, regions, and countries are like brands with which people are familiar.   If you asked a random person on the street in California what Burbank.com would be without prior knowledge, he would probably say, “a site with information about Burbank, California.”
I also like category defining product related domain names like TruckRims.com (which will be auctioned off by Rick Latona at Traffic) or ComputerSpeakers.com (which I once owned).   If you know what to expect on a website before you’ve ever seen the site, the name is probably a good name. It’s important, however, that a business can be built around that concept – otherwise, how will you make money?
One problem I am having is that many end user companies also know how strong these product and service related domain names are.   I have seen quite a few Whois lookups lately where names are owned by CSN Stores or Net Shops.   These companies get it and they own some fantastic product-related domain names that probably won’t ever be on the market.
If you have great .com product related domain names, drop me a note in the comment ection.   I had once offered up to $100,000 for a city .com domain name, but that didn’t yield a single viable city .com name unfortunately.   I am not looking for anything other than .com right now, nor am I looking for brandable type names.   I am looking for names like WindowTreatments.com, Dehumidifiers.com, WashingMachines.com… etc.   If you have a fantastic name like this, I am looking – and if I can’t afford it, I know several friends who have much larger budgets for these types of names. The problem is that end users own most of these names.   Some are starting to understand the value – which ultimately is a very good thing for domain investors.

  1. I have found your articles interesting as you have indicated your background was outside of IT. Just curious – have you ever considered foreign language domains?
    ***UPDATED BY ELLIOT***
I think they are good if they cctld is used in that country and the domain name actually means something in the language. For example, Villas.it.

  2. Before anyone starts chuckling too loudly, just do a google search to see what pops up on the search on these keyword searches.. My sites may currently be sub-par for their potential but I am knee-deep in some other pressing matters..

  7. >I have seen quite a few Whois lookups lately
You run your own whois lookup service?
    ***UPDATED BY ELLIOT***
No, but I do quite a few lookups for potential acquisitions.

  8. funny you mention csn stores – i was close to selling casualdining.com but we couldn’t agree on a final price – they were going to use the name for their online casual dining furniture concept – however, phrase is more well-known in the restaurant space (think chili’s, olive garden, etc).

  18. Hi Elliot,
Nice article and a good revelation of what many domainers have been doing for years. I wrote a guest post for Trenddomaining.com last week regarding how to discover product generic terms very easily. Here’s the link: http://www.trenddomaining.com/guest-post-new-domain-registrations-cheap-hot-tip-for-great-domains/
I also own “ProductDomains.com” if anyone wants it. I’ll take $3500 for it.
Here’s just a few niche product domains I own, will sell for cheap (there’s always thousands more to buy “OOTB” -Out Of The Basket — or better known as “new registrations” lol)
Flocculator.com (never heard of it? google it. Expensive product one word domain)

  20. My domain names make a domainer cringe as they are primarily too long and would never be considered category killers. I’m realistic and understand they hold little pure type in value, but what is valuable about these names are the keywords they contain.
Because of the SEO work I’ve put into a network of 14 sites, this one verticle earns the following each month (all from organic traffic):
    Commission Juntion: ~$300
    Other Affiliate Network: ~$100
    Adsense: ~$200
    Link Sales: ~$300
I can’t retire off these 14 sites, but they are all less than 1 year old. The best thing about the organic traffic is that the income above is 100% passive. I don’t even have to bother negotiating ad sales w/ potential advertisers or micro managing a PPC account, it’s all completely automated. If you are interested in discussing shoot me an email.

  24. Gee, I don’t want to seem harsh but I would cut up my credit cards if I awoke one morning and found I’d registered some domains similar to most of the above. As it is I have a list of about 1000 domains still available for registration that I would consider better than most of the ones offered.
Elliot, perhaps you might pick out a few of the above that meet your standards (assuming you can find a few) and say which ones they are to “set the bar”. For example, I suppose I don’t mind “wholesalecheese.com” but that would be about as “low” as I’d set the bar.

  25. Hi Elliot,
I am offering these names up for sale.
    i-RingTones.com
    PriceBlogger.com
    JasonBlog.com
    MixFood.com
    GuierrelaBlog.com
    uASK.net (very brandable domain name)
Please feel free to email me.

  26. Hi Elliot,
Kindly tell me what you think of the following:
JumboPen.com (Estibot: $1,400, but I’d accept low to mid $xxx)
SwimHero.com (I feel that there’d be a trendy increase of swimming searches, after Phelps’ amazing victory!)
Both are currently parked at Sedo. I look forward to hearing from you (or your friends who may interested). Here’s my e-mail: livethedream10 (at) gmail (dot) com.
    Thanks,
    Johnnie Boy 🙂

  27. I think if you are fortunate to have 1 of these types of SOLID product domains (Solid meaning that the product is something you’ll buy or consider buying in your lifetime), you are fortunate and if you are a smart domainer you probably realize and cherish and hold tight on those.
For posters putting up more than a couple names here and your name isn’t Frank Schilling or you aren’t working for netshops, I’d bet your nameS aren’t all that.

  28. Hi Mr.Elliot,
Pls contact me if you are interested in my domains.

  29. Now play nice kids! They’re not all stinkers – although it’s always painful to see some names on public display. How do you call an ugly baby an ugly baby? Well, you just don’t! Somewhere out there it’s still loved by someone!
BTW – I think InflatableKayak.com and AmethystJewelry.com (and a few others) are pretty decent names. Names like that actually describe something that people are looking for online! Anybody posting names for sale – I would suggest that you try running them through this Google tool:
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Make sure you use the ‘exact’ drop down box. If it has a ‘search pulse’ G wil tell you. That and the avg ppc amount (click the ‘show all’ box) will give you a better idea of a domains value….No pulse=(mostly)No value!
Just some humble advice from a guy who learned the hard way (and reg’d many stinkers in the process!).

  30. Buying and selling a good domain name requires to define two essential things:-
    1. What should be considered as a good domain name and what is considered good according to your requirements? And to be specific, what are your requirements? You have given 3 examples which gives a fair idea but is not completely satisfactory in answering this question. It will be a great help for all if you can mention the market you want to target, specific product types that you are looking for or is it that you are planning to develop a name in the similar grounds as CSN Stores or Net Shops, etc.
The second essential thing is not answered by you at all which also constitutes a major consideration in buying and selling a domain and that is-
    2. – the price. Unfortunately there has been no mention of a price range you are looking for in buying a domain. It would be easy for anybody to make offers if you provided an idea about the price.
The pre-requisites mentioned above would have saved you all the replies that we are reading here and if defined, will save a lot of valuable time of both the parties.
I hope you will agree with me that a good domain name has a potential of at least 50yrs of recurrent earnings.
And ss so rightly stated by Rick Schwartz in the current DNJournal newsletter,
[The least a domain should sell for if you are going to base it on “today’s revenue” is the LIFETIME earnings of that domain.]
    Have a great day
    Ashok Kumar
    ***UPDATED BY ELLIOT***
If the domain names are equivalent to my request, the price isn’t a big deal. I am willing to pay good money for good domain names. I’ve been contacted privately by a couple of people who did send me top quality, category-defining domain names as requested, but we haven’t been able to agree to a price. As I expect, the price is very high, and I need to be able to figure out how to make the money back. A person in that industry could probably do it, but as an outsider it’s much more difficult – hence my reticence to move forward.
In my post, I asked for “category-defining domain names”, and I have responded to those who submitted “category defining” domain names. RoomDividers.com which sold for $75,000 is a category defining domain name. I wouldn’t have paid that price, but that’s the type of name I requested – not brandable.
I want to be able to build a website that people would expect when they type-in that domain name. I am not looking for something brandable. I can go out and register plenty of brandable names right now if I wanted to do that.
As people have mentioned publicly and privately, most of the submitted names wouldn’t be considered category defining.
I should also add that I’ve never purchased a domain name (or sold one for that matter) based on revenue. As I’ve said in this blog before, revenue multiple purchases aren’t smart, IMO.

  31. Dear Elliot,
Your input to domain name selection is very valuable. I am a newbie to this market and have purchased following domain names quite sometime back.
    1. xlfleet.com
    2. xlsmartdrive.com
    3. xlgems.com
    4. xlmarkets.com
    5. xlinside.com
    6. xlstars.com
    7. xlprimary.com
    8. xlcomms.com
    9. scotrental.com
    10. xlselfdrive.com
    11. xlcharge.com
    12. xllooks.com
If you can make out, primarily i have tried to build a portfolio around the word ‘XL’. From your experience, is there any market opportunity for such portfolios i.e. purchase a whole bundle of names revolving around certain keywords.
    Any comments would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Sikander

  32. enjoyed this post immensely as I understand it first hand. I am not really a domainer was just creative with foresight to register names like jeweler.com rabbi.com bras.com and a host of others. ( have put a few up for sale )
your points struck a cord of reality, when you follow the link (diamondagent.com/domains.htm ) to the list of domains for sale there are marketing letters written – stories being told – business usages highlighted and yet the bites are only nibblers or window shoppers or knowledge seekers and few with a check book able to write ‘pay to the order of:”
    Jeweler.com
    JewelTrust.com
    BestJewelryValue.com
    InsureJewelry.com
    JewelryAgent.com
    JewelryClassifieds.com
    JewelerExchange.com
    JewelryEducation.org
    PawnJeweler.com
    PhotoJeweler.com
    Shoppingring.com
    Shoppingrings.com
    Generic Domain Names

    eKeychains.com
    Get RealCandy.com

    MrFancy.com
    ThatsaDeal.com
    YouMayWin.com
    EGOB.com
    EGOBS.com
    Mazel.com

  33. Elliot,
I have several generic domains. The best is probably BarFurniture.com.
Especially in light of Rick’s recent sale of RoomDividers.com I think this domain is pretty solid. It’s just about finding the right end user who “gets it”. What do you think?

  34. MadePure.com
    DebtSerf.com
    DebtVirus.com
    HelpFindMyPet.com
    MoneyNetDaily.com
    PukePoint.com
    OneClickLawyer.com
    TsunamiLaw.com
    ShameVideo.com
    InstantBlogsite.com
    InHouseWebsite.com
    InstantWebsiteMachine.com
    POvideoRN.com

  35. Man…why won’t these people just get it? He said CATEGORY defining names i.e. RoomDividers.com. Not eRoomDividers, not YouPeekThruRoomDividers.com, but RoomDividers.
I suppose some of you will post regardless for all the pairs of eyes looking (and shaking their heads) at some of your lists.

  36. PJ:
    I get it.
There are others that see these names. If I depended on one response, it wouldn’t be worth it.
Hopefully, some of the heads are shaking up and down and contact me with a good offer.

  37. I’m always looking to buy domains. Fell free to submit your names and price hopes @ buydomains.com/sellYourDomainNames.do

  39. I think It would have more value if U own ParistoNewYork.com. That name can be developed into travel/airline tickets business website that serve Trips “From Paris to NewYork” [.net is available for registration though].

  40. Elliot,
.Info domains are good for redirecting traffic to the .com websites. I think companies who own .com will consider acquiring other extension to increase their marketing base.
As for .com, I don’t have too many that are worth that much. I will provide my list. I am putting my energy into building my .org domain, especially the 6 character named after my city. I’ve already lowered the Alexa from 11 million to 7 million in a the last week. I’ve pumping out the articles, as well as expanding it into other areas.
A few .com domains are as follows:
    (UK Extension) AirForceBase.co.uk
    cakegalore.com
    animationmodels.com
    LeatherManBags.com
    charcoalsticks.com

    Ringsdb.com
    TaxTransparency.com
    Venezia-ABC.com
    YellowCabNY.com

I have many other .com domains, but my .net, .org, .us and .info collection is much stronger.
