Uniregistry Now Accepting Topcoin

According to a tweet from Uniregistry founder Frank Schilling, Uniregistry is now accepting Topcoin to pay for domain registrations across all extensions. By the end of the day today, Topcoin can also be used for inbound domain transfers and renewals across all extensions. I was told company will soon accept the cryptocurrency to pay for premium domain names offered by the registry, such as registry reserved .Link, .Help, .Property and other domain names.

I was told “Uniregistry customers receive 50% of their purchase in topcoin at no additional charge when they buy, transfer or renew a domain name. They can redeem 20-35% of registration, transfer or renewal purchases in Topcoin. Early in the new year you will be able to redeem up to 100% of premium domain name purchases in Topcoin.

Topcoin (TPC) is a cryptocurrency that was introduced in February of 2014 (update: see comment from Miles below), and I understand that it can be converted into Bitcoin (and vice versa) relatively easily. According to Frank, Topcoin “acts as a discounting mechanism and we intend to offer 100% exchange of top coin for premium names at low conversion rates by late this year.” Because the actual cost of each premium-designated registry domain names is nil, the potential downside risk of Topcoin currency fluctuations is relatively minimal.

I believe Namecheap was the first domain registrar to accept Bitcoin (or any cryptocurrency) to register domain names, as the company announced on its blog in March of 2013. Uniregistry will be the first domain registry to offer customers the ability to purchase premium domain names with cryptocurrency.

The company will also accept TPC for a percentage of Name Administration Inc. premium domain names. In addition, I was told the company will likely roll this option out to clients who use  DomainNameSales.com  once the platform is migrated inside Uniregistry, which is expected early in 2015. I am sure there will be an official announcement once this happens.

  1. Nice to see uniregistry keep pushing forward with new ideas, and incentives. I am sure many members would like to see paypal integrated first though, as I keep getting some sort of foreign exchange fee, and paypal might get rid of that.

  2. Uniregistry’s Paypal integration is complete!!

We are just testing it this week and hope to launch that on the weekend. You will be able to pay with Paypal and still receive 50% of your purchase in Topcoin at no additional charge 🙂

  3. Upon further research ( https://topcoin.com/details ), this looks to be an excellent use case of the cryptocurrency/blockchain technology. Topcoin doesn’t appear to be a purely decentralized cryptocurrency one can speculate on such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, rather, be it an innovative loyalty rewards program. Thus, you can only obtain it by purchasing a domain name from one of the Topcoin partners, and in-turn, only spend it at one of those partners on domain names/hosting.

Question: Didn’t Epik receive a patent on this cryptocurrency-to-domain-name closed loop system last year? http://domainnamewire.com/2013/09/12/epik-patent/

Overall it sounds like a brilliant strategy to build upon the synergies of two complimentary digital asset classes.

  4. Can someone explain to me why Bitcoin is not used directly for the transactions but instead must go through Topcoin as a middleman?

  5. Appears there’s some confusion between:

    – TopCoin (TPC) http://topcoin.com/details

    and:

    – TopCoin (TOP) http://topcoin.pw/

From what I can tell, they are completely unrelated, but some of the details from the article are bleeding into each other. TOP started in Feb 2014, but TPC started in Sept 2014. One appears to be yasc (yet another scam coin) and the other seems to have validity.

    Have I got that right?

  6. This is basically a 50% instant cash back on domain purchases, right? 50% Topcoin credit -> exchange to bitcoin -> exchange to cash via coinbase.

But the name choice is not a great one, not only b/c of the existing topcoin.pw currency but also b/c ‘topcoin’ doesn’t give you an idea of what the coin is used for. To contrast, the URO cryptocurrency name gives a hint of what the coin can be used for (exchange it for raw urea deposits).
