What is TeaParty.com Worth & Should The Band Sell The Domain Name?

I had a post written discussing the Business Week article about the TeaParty.com domain name that is owned by a Canadian band of the same name. The band has owned it since the early 1990s, which is pretty cool considering that there are many great domain names that haven’t been registered for that long.

Anyway, Mike Berkens wrote a post pretty much covering what I wrote, so I am going to change the direction up a bit. Instead, I want to know what you think TeaParty.com is worth in light of the Tea Party movement, and I created a poll to find out.

I’d be interested in knowing your thoughts on whether the band should sell the domain name. If the Tea Party is a short lived “movement,” it could turn out to be a KerryEdwards.com situation, where the domain owner turned down a large offer and the domain name returned to its minimal value after the Kerry Edwards campaign ended. Should the Tea Party pick up more steam and become more mainstream, the domain name could have more value.

The band could move to something like TeaPartyBand.com or TeaPartyMusic.com or something they could hand register. What are your thoughts?

  1. @ owen

I only saw it on Mike’s blog this morning, although I am sure plenty of other sites have covered it. Seems that once one site has an article, others follow suit. Been working on getting a site re-launched and updated.

  2. TeaParty.org might be more appropriate in this case and if the band asks for outrageous money, it might be a practical alternative.

I’d say no more than $100,000.

  3. @ Josh

If someone came along and offered me $2,000,000 for DomainInvesting.com because there’s a famous person named Elliot that has nothing to do with me, I’d sell in a second, move my content over to something else, and buy myself a new toy.

  4. I’ve never even heard of this band, so they aren’t THAT famous.

Anyway… I see this domain fetching no more than low to mid $xx,xxx at this point in time. More if the Tea Party movement gains momentum.

  5. I have never heard of a Tea Party movement (as I live in Germany) but in former times at school i learned something about the Boston Tea Party. 😉

But I heared from “The Tea Party” and I am playing their music sometimes on my radioshow.

BTW: they don’t need to buy teaparty.com, It seems as they use(d) teapartypatriots.com.

    Ahoi!

You just put yourself on the same level as a 10+ figure earning rock band and brand name that continues to play and sell, you are really baffling me here E.

It wouldnt just be STUPID to accept the price of one tour bus for your bands name in the dot com but very short sighted as well. Bands reunitem in fact they did just this year!

That name has HUGE potential to earn them 10\s of millions more together or not.

This is a bonehead of the year award thinking they should take $2M, maybe $22M.

  7. I’m not doubting the Tea Party is a 10 figure (billions?) earning band, but I had never heard of them. I guess they are Huge in Canada, but even that isn’t really THAT huge. Supposedly they sold 1.6 million units for their career combined. Impressive? Yes. More than 99% of bands that ever existed, but selling that over a 20 year career isn’t really “huge.” Going Gold in Canada ( which is 1/10th the sales required in the US) twice in the last 10 years must support one hell of a touring business in Canada if they are that big. There are tons of bands in the U.S. that have sold millions of albums and go on tour and might gross low 7 figures. It sounds like they’ve Grossed low 8 figures for record companies, over 20 years.

  8. Actually ment to say 9 🙂

As for my comment, not calling you a bonehead E but this discussion oes against common economical sense. If Elliotsblog.com earned 100’s of million and had millions of fans, played on the radio today, toured the world, reunited just this year and knew the money will keep rolling in…. would you sell domaininvesting.com for $2M, I shouldnt even have to ask that.

  9. At Greg, yes 8 figures for album sells, no matter 1 or 20 yrs. the total sum is what needs to be compared to $2M BUT there was and is tour money, apparel, promotional, come backs etc.

They arn’t the Eagles but theyre ours 🙂

  10. Lease them the home page requiring it contain a link to all band content. Take advantage of the massive free media the movement will provide.

Take it back later, bigger and better than ever.

Then allow your talents, if special they be.. to take it from there.

  11. Sure they could but I find this train of thought funny, if they never owned the name we’d say they should, now we think one BIG end user should give up a name to another end user?

IMO the Tea Party will either decide this coming election or not exist in a couple years. That band is the better choice atm to keep rockin lol

  12. corporateelectioneering.com DOMAINS (.mobi, .tv, etc. along with a Hebrew translator) are for sale as a package and carry a HYPER-VALUE predicated on the US Supreme Court ruling that allows PACs and now SUPER-PACS to use CORPORATIONS (domestic and YES, FOREIGN) to financially back candidates for ANY purpose and not have to REPORT to the FEC.

How do you think Obama is going to reach his $1BILLION goal??? Collection boxes, little checks and even high dollar dinners and speaking engagements WON’T CUT IT!

These DOMAINS reflect the EPICENTER of how that type of WEALTHY DONOR will be courted and secured.

Contact webmaster@corporateelectioneering.com for further details and to place your bid (US Dollars ONLY please…lots of foreign interest here.)

*** Sedo has yet to follow up with us… ***

    Thank you.

  13. Your blog…why haven’t any majors picked it up?

PS why would you not bid on the domain package for corporateelectioneering.com (we have the hebrew IND for people like yourself…AIPAC)

    • “why haven’t any majors picked it up?”

What does that even mean? I do quite well with advertisers as you can clearly see from the paid banners on the site. This blog isn’t my primary source of income – selling domain names is.

I see little value in your domain name and don’t see why anyone would pay any kind of premium for it.

For the record, I don’t understand Hebrew so people like myself wouldn’t care.
