WordPress Could Make .Blog Domain Names Very Popular

I believe WordPress is the largest content management system  used by millions of websites, including this one. Many websites that operate using WordPress are blogs of all sizes. Blog operators will be the target audience for .Blog domain names, and WordPress will be promoting .Blog domain names. This could make them very popular.

According to a blog post on the WordPress corporate blog this morning, the parent company of WordPress (Automattic) “secured the rights to oversee and operate the sale and registration of .blog domains, a new and never-before available top-level domain.”

Quite some time ago, CNN published a list of all new gTLD extensions that were applied for along with the applicants. There were 9 applicants for the .Blog extension, and apparently the entity related to WordPress prevailed.

I think .Blog domain names could prove to be very popular amongst bloggers, but that depends on a few factors:

Promotion – Point of sale promotion via WordPress sign-up page would be helpful. In addition, registrars could help by promoting available .Blog domain names when a user searches for any domain name with blog at the end.

WordPress integration – If WordPress makes it super easy to buy a .Blog domain name and immediately start using their domain name in conjunction with a WordPress blog, that could make it easier for users. I am sure some registrars offer this type of integration for other domain extensions, but WordPress offering it would make it super simple to get started.

Pricing – I think the pricing needs to be better than other extensions. I could see a someone opting for Elliots.Blog if ElliotsBlog.com was taken, especially if it is not entirely commercial in nature. If .Blog was cheaper than .com, they might opt for Elliots.Blog vs. a less friendly ElliotSilversBlog.com.

.Blog is one of the few extensions I could see having a major impact on the entire new gTLD space. There are so many blogs and WordPress is pretty much the main blogging platform. It will be interesting to see how many blogs are using .Blog over the next few years.

Thanks to Chris Sheridan for pointing out the WordPress tweet to me!
