I’ve Become a ccTLD Investor

For the last few weeks, I’ve been learning about ccTLDs. I received feedback from a number of people, some of whom gave advice about investing in ccTLDs, and some who told me to stick with .com domain names. A couple people even specifically advised me not to invest in .US domain names right now, because my money could be better spent elsewhere right now. I really do appreciate all the advice, as it has given me an idea of how I should proceed with the ccTLD market.

I just recently became a ccTLD investor with my first .US purchases (an investment rather than a protective measure as I did previously). While I don’t think Americans or American companies will begin using the .US extension very soon, I do think its a great way for American companies to target Europeans who are more inclined to use local ccTLDs.

Because of this, I decided to buy many second tier .US domain names for registration fee, where I would be very happy to pay a significant premium if it was .com. I might not be jumping in with a huge splash, I am slowly wading in to this and am being strategic about it. Once I think my acquisition phase is initially done, I will reveal what I have been buying, but I don’t want to say what they are yet, since there are a number of similar names I am considering 🙂

These aren’t short term investments, and I will probably begin developing directories on a couple of them to see how Google ranks them and to do some experimenting with regards to traffic, return visits, time on the site, and other things that will help me evaluate whether consumers trust a .US and to see where visitors come from.

I will write a more comprehensive review of the TRAFFIC show on the return flight home on Sunday, but in short, the show was excellent, and it gave me the confidence to invest in something that wasn’t previously in my comfort area.

Why I Don't Like the Burbank Website

Subscribe to Elliot's BlogI will be the first to admit, I don’t like how Burbank.com currently looks. I don’t believe the current site is attractive or would make people jazzed about visiting the city of Burbank, California – a great city with a ton of activities. Don’t get me wrong, the content is good, but I just don’t like how it looks. So, I am doing something about it and building a completely new website.
When I first launched Burbank.com in July, I was under the gun. Every day that I wasn’t live Google links were being lost and the site’s ranking was being impacted. The site was previously a great Burbank online newspaper, but once I purchased it, the owner redirected the links to his new site. I feared losing Google’s trust, and I didn’t want to make it difficult to regain position once the site relaunched.   It was also very close to my wedding, so with many things going on then,   I essentially built a makeshift site. There are few images on the site, and there are Adsense ads to generate a bit of incremental revenue. This isn’t the idea geowebsite, in my opinion.
After spending the past several weeks working on the new site, I am getting closer to relaunch.   I am hoping the relaunch will happen next week or the last week in October. When I do relaunch, I will write another blog post about what I did and why, to help others who may be in my position. So take a look at Burbank.com now so you can get a good before and after comparison when the new site is launched.

Where's Elliot?

Sorry for the light posting this past week. I have been in New Hampshire and Lowell, Massachusetts doing research for Lowell.com. Now that the base of the site has been built, optimizing it for search has become the main priority. This involves going through each page, changing meta tags and anchor text to make sure each page can be seen and read by Google. Not so much fun, but a necessary part of development. Hopefully the fruits of this labor will help with the ranking of Lowell.com.
Once the website has been optimized (although I think it will be an ongoing process), I am going to begin seeking advertisers. In my visit to the city of Lowell spanning a few days, I met some business leaders and city leaders, and I was warmly received. I hope they saw my passion for this site, and I have really taken a liking to Lowell. My goal is to make the site mutually beneficial for the city, its residents, its visitors, and the businesses who will advertise on the site.
For now, it’s back to the optimization process. I should be back to blogging next week.
