Request a Fast Domain Transfer

Depending on the outgoing and incoming domain registrar, an inter-registrar transfer can take anywhere from a few moments to several days. When there’s quite a bit of money on the line, it seems that a domain name transfer can take forever. I’ve had some transfers take as long as a week to process, which to me, seems completely unacceptable for a process that should take just a few moments.

I want to share a tip that some domain registrars probably don’t want you to know. If you are able to speak with the right person at a domain registrar, you may be able to speed up the domain transfer. Instead of waiting for days, the transfer can be manually processed very quickly.

Some domain registrars say that outbound transfers take extra time to process as a security precaution. I think this is a fair point, but when I am selling a domain name and there are thousands of dollars sitting in escrow, I want the transfer to be executed expeditiously. For the most part, customer support staff will either tell you that you can’t get the domain name released more quickly than usual. From my experiences with several domain registrars, this isn’t true. Domain registrars should be able to release pending transfer domain names manually.

In order to get this to happen, you generally need to speak with the right employee. That  person may be a senior customer support person, or it might have to be an executive at the registrar, depending on the company (another good reason to network at conferences is so that you can meet these senior people who can help you out). If your credentials check out (ie they can prove you’re the actual owner and have the right to transfer the name), many registrars will accomodate your request to placate you.

The next time you find yourself waiting for a domain name to be released for a transfer, try to get in touch with the right person at the losing domain registrar and request that they release your domain name manually.

  1. It’s great having access to senior people who work efficiently and solve problems quickly. They’re usually professional, friendly and highly effective. I’ve been helped by some who make things happen when it seems ‘impossible’ to get things done.
    Thank you.

  2. Does anyone have an experience transferring/pushing a domain at Pheenix.com? I was told even after I get the domain I just purchased I have to wait 60 days at Pheenix.com until I can move it to my Godaddy or Network Solutions account…

  3. Jim,
I assume it was a dropping domain caught by phoenix since they are the new boys on the block.

It is a icann rule that new domains must remain with the initial registrar for 60 days. The registry will not permit it to me moved. After 60 days, it can be transferred.
(I’m sure you already know this. Make sure have the auth. code and the domain is unlocked.)

  4. Do You use anyone besides Escrow for funds transfer? They now have a 3 day hold period? The fees seem to be a bit high on higher priced domains as well.
